These are times when Indian companies are planning for expansion…. The government should look to curb the carbon footprint for these expansions in the nascent stage so that the investors can plan accordingly… The environment shall be at utmost priority otherwise the mini players making profit will keep bypassing rules and regulations to keep our Country habitable. Special focus should be on these companies who out of giving jobs and eating away the habitable area for human beings. A special mention for Kharagpur where the people are regularly facing health issues due to the pollution levels which are not being monitored properly.
Carbon capture policy on the cards in India Dastur Energy CEO, Atanu Mukherjee, complimented the Indian government for advancing its CCUS policies, in a recent interview with Business Standard. At the India Energy Week held earlier this month, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) was front and center and viewed as one of the key strategies to achieve decarbonization goals. As Atanu Mukherjee outlined in his interview, the Government of India recognizes its importance and is developing a national policy to support deployment of CCUS technologies in India. Perhaps a policy structured like a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme (similar to the ones announced for green hydrogen in June 2023, and coal gasification last month), could help trigger activity in the CCUS space. Dastur Energy, under Mukherjee’s stewardship, has been enabling clean energy transition and carbon management pathways for several large corporate and public sector clients in the ‘hard to abate’ sectors, across the US, Middle east and India. In November 2023, Dastur Energy conducted a detailed study on CCUS that was commissioned by NITI Aayog (the think tank and knowledge and innovation hub of the Government of India (GoI). This comprehensive study offered a basis that could be leveraged for national policymaking. Various initiatives have already started. These include the government’s efforts to identify oilfields belonging to Indian Oil Corp Limited (IOCL) for prospective CCUS projects, and the sub-surface data analysis being conducted by the state run-Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd to identify potential for carbon storage. Energy storage is key in maintaining grid flexibility during surplus and deficit power generation. Around 34 gigawatts (GW) or 136 gigawatts per hour (GWh) of battery energy storage system is expected to be installed in India by 2030, according to a report by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). However, there are a lot of challenges on this front.
At the RE+ Storage Show 2023 organized by SolarQuarter and WindInsider, Mr Purnendu Chaubey, Secretary, WIPPA India and Vice President, ReNew, spoke on the importance of storage in India’s energy transition, highlighting how storage is a necessity to achieve India’s target of 500 GW of installed RE capacity by 2030, and to effectively integrate large scale RE in the national grid. He said, “There is an urgent requirement to augment the balancing capacity of the existing grid which can enhance the flexibility of the power-system. Therefore, the need of the hour is to ensure appropriate planning to develop indigenous technology solutions and bringing down the cost of battery solutions to achieve economies of scale. The Government is bringing out RTC, FDRE and peak power tenders which can supply firm power. Thus storage, along with wind, are viable solutions and can ensure both peak-time and round-the-clock power supply. Hence, this can only be achieved if there are targeted efforts made to provide the right regulatory environment, low-cost financing schemes, infrastructure investment and R&D to manufacture longer-duration energy storage system in India.” #windenergy #storagesolutions
