In June 2022, nearly 400 people became ill from consuming tara flour, a novel food ingredient used without formal review by the FDA. It wasn't until May 2024, two years later, that FDA formally reviewed and then banned the ingredient from the food supply. Why are food manufacturers allowed to self-approve ingredients for use in food without regulatory oversight? Colleagues, about time we drive the nail hard into the wood of the Food industries we represent or audit or we may be employed, that a consumer focused mindset and approach is way to go, if we're serious about bringing down the cloud of Food Safety incidents blowing up here and there all over the place. For a taste, this paper kind of assures we can do this. Taking a cue, '...consumer awareness and concern about chemical preservatives have led researchers to focus on the use of natural antimicrobial compounds such as bacteriocins.' This paper was as far back in 2021, and while Pediocin have been used in Canada as anti-listeria solution in the Food industry, FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have only just granted GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status to INNEO, a food processing aid made to eliminate Listeria monocytogenes.
