"The #CoE_WFD2024 started on Wednesday with the news of Donald Trump being back in the White House, reminding us about the context of #populist rising. This current industry of #FakeNews is weaponised to weaken our #democracies through divisive information" - Yoav SHEMER-KUNZ, Syracuse University of Strasbourg, General Rapporteur. Marcus Aurelius makes a superb point. As we go into a full on 6 months of elections we see a parade of people asked their opinions on the news and TV shows. The problem is that it's all fluff and pointless as they generally have no understanding of that issue in context or the global situation. They can say there is a hole in my road, my child missed out on a school place etc... However, there is no meaningful dialogue. If you're on a show OR creating content for this, please can we focus on context and links. It would be way more productive and interesting and might start to solve some of the many programe we have. The next government needs to be about substance and management not soundbites and ideology. #media #politics #democracy

Anne Applebaum's Auatocracy In: Today, we face not an alliance but an axis of autocracies – China, Russia, North Korea, Iran and kindred spirits across Asia, Africa and the Americas. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is seen by some as the Eurasian counter to NATO while the recently expanded BRICS is portrayed as the ‘global majority’ response to the G7. China and Russia declared their ‘no limits’ partnership in 2022. At their Washington summit this June, NATO labeled China a ‘decisive enabler’ of the Russian campaign in Ukraine. Russia also benefits from Iranian-made drones and North Korean-made armaments. The autocracies share weapons, technologies and ‘best practices’ in surveillance, governance, propaganda, and narratives based on ‘Big Lies’. For a real-time example, look to what is happening in Venezuela. To better understand how we got into this mess read Anne Applebaum’s briskly brilliant Autocracy, Inc. The Dictators Who Want to Run the World. Be warned, however, it’s a depressing chronicle of greed, power and Western naiveté.

Social media is rife with criticisms of politicians. While scrutiny is vital in a democracy, it's important to remember that constant negativity can discourage good people from entering politics. We need diverse voices, open debate, and engaged citizens to ensure a healthy democracy. We also need to foster an environment where we can disagree with each other respectfully, without resorting to personal attacks. Let's hold our leaders accountable, yes, but also create a space where positive change is possible. #politics #democracy #engagement #respect
