Georgios Katrougalos, independent expert on a democratic and equitable international order of the United Nations, #Greece: "Populism is not the cause of the crisis of our democracies, it is just a symptom. It is the reaction of the population to the actual flaws of our democracies. Minorities now in our society believe that the economy is rigged in favor of the rich and the powerful. The populists exploit the feeling, but they do not create the structure of the problems, the true cause is the distribution of the wealth. If we want to combat populism, we must combat the true cause of this phenomenon". Follow live: https://lnkd.in/dxT9ijHe #CoE_WFD

The Role of U.S. Policy in Latin America's Democracy and Middle Class Development The video transcript discusses how the speaker's uncle viewed poverty in Latin America as a national security threat to the United States due to the belief that impoverished people would be more inclined towards communist systems. The focus of U.S. policy at the time was anti-communism, leading to support for oligarchs and dictators who claimed to oppose communism, while neglecting the lower class. The uncle believed that in order to promote democracy in Latin America, a middle class needed to be established. This highlights the complexities of U.S. foreign policy during that time period. #NationalSecurity #Communism #LatinAmerica #Democracy #MiddleClass #AntiCommunism #Oligarchy #Dictator #MilitaryAid #vizard

"Geopolitics and Democracy: The Western Liberal Order from Foundation to Fracture" by Peter Trubowitz and Brian Burgoon explores the decline of the liberal international order, particularly in the post-Cold War era. The authors argue that the disconnection between international ambitions and domestic priorities has weakened mainstream political parties in the West, leading to the rise of populism and nationalism. They identify key strategies like globalism, isolationism, and nationalism that have shaped foreign policy, and emphasize how a lack of focus on social protection has eroded public support for liberal internationalism. The book suggests three solutions—restraint from globalism, initiating a new Cold War, or focusing on domestic renewal to bridge the growing gap between voters and the political establishment. Nobel prize-winning Economist Amartya Sen on the importance of freedom: "Freedoms are not only the primary ends of development, they are among its principal means. In addition to acknowledging, foundationally, the evaluative importance of freedom, we also have to understand the empirical connection that links freedoms of different kinds with one another. Political freedoms (in the form of free speech and elections) help to promote economic security. Economic facilities (in the form of opportunities for participation in trade and production) can help to generate personal abundance as well as public resources for social facilities. Freedoms of different kinds can strengthen one another." African Students For Liberty | African Liberty #SpiritOfLiberty| #CheetahGeneration

Is democracy evolving or eroding? Explore how systemic changes under Trump reshaped governance. As MONEY explores in this piece, his rise to power not only marks a seismic shift in the nation's political landscape but also underscores the transition of the United States from a democracy to what many are calling an oligarchy. Just finished listening the debate between #Biden and #Trump. It's fascinating to see the same trends playing out differently in America 🇺🇸 and Ukraine 🇺🇦. #Bread and #Spectacle: Society's demands haven't changed since Roman times. Trump delivered this better than Biden, similar to how Zelenskyy did in Ukraine. Presidential #Personalities: Presidents reflect what people want. In the US, they value age and experience, so they have 78-year-old Trump and 81-year-old Biden. In Ukraine, people want fresh, “young new faces”, leading to 46-year-old Zelenskyy. #Institutional Crisis: We're facing a global crisis in our institutions, especially the education system. What should we do? Recognize the problems, find the best solutions, and take action today. #takeactions #CNN #Politics #Society #Change #Leadership #GlobalCrisis Check out more opinions here: https://lnkd.in/dvus9Ynx

No political ideology is perfect. While democracy, socialism and communism each bring a unique approach to power, ownership and freedom each have their advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the success or failure of each ideology depends on how well it balances these values and responds to the needs of its citizens. #DemocracyVsSocialism #PoliticalIdeology #IdeologyDiscussion #DemocratisProject https://ow.ly/JmO250Tjw8e
