Rwanda is facing its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola. As of 2 days ago, September 30th, 2024, there are 26 confirmed cases, including 8 deaths, with the majority of cases being healthcare workers in Kigali. The outbreak has raised concerns due to its high fatality rate, potential for spread to neighboring countries, and the lack of available treatments or vaccines. Afghanistan is not the only country facing a lack of vaccine doses. During today’s partial attendance at a 'Zero Dose Learning Week' Post-event webinar organised by GAVI, I learned that many other countries also have zero doses or low routine immunisation coverage. The most effective way to promote health and well-being and prevent disease is by working towards Universal Health Coverage. This can be achieved through the provision of integrated health services, multisectoral policies, and actions on social determinants of health, and by empowering individuals and communities. So we need to work on reforming and strengthening the health system rather than focusing only on polio/EPI in Afghanistan and other parts of the world.

People being impacted by diseases and ill health are not uncommon. There are preventable diseases, and Government efforts must focus on preventing these diseases. The responsibility of the communities is to provide awareness about the same. To promote awareness about the crucial role of immunisation, India observes "National Immunisation Day" every year on January 18. In addition to eliminating Polio in 2014, India also achieved another milestone of neonatal tetanus elimination in 2015. The process of vaccination has several contours. Digitising cold chain management and capacity building in repairing and maintaining cold chain equipment are necessary steps the government has put in place. Public participation is crucial for the success of immunisation programs, and awareness campaigns conducted on this day emphasise the importance of timely vaccination, address myths and misconceptions, and encourage parents to vaccinate their children. 💡 Food for thought: What we know about the ongoing mpox outbreak right now is that the situation is not fully understood because a lack of diagnostics and testing capabilities which is limiting understanding of the true burden of disease according to Dr Fiona Braka, the Emergency Response Manager for WHO’s AFRO region. What we do know, she said, is that there are two distinct outbreaks in the DRC. Based on the information currently available, clade Ia is circulating in regions in the country where mpox is considered endemic and affecting mostly children. While clade Ib is spreading mostly among adults in the eastern provinces of South Kivu and North Kivu. Wrapping up #ChildHealthWeek 2024 with a spotlight on an issue crucial for every child’s survival: routine immunisation 💉 Over the past 50 years, vaccines have saved millions of lives, increasing infant survival rates by 40% globally and over 50% in Africa. Yet today, access to these vital interventions is stalling. We are witnessing the resurgence of diseases like measles and polio and an increase in cholera, dengue and mpox. For too many children in conflict zones, life-saving vaccines remain out of reach. This Child Health Week, we called on the EU, member states, and global health initiatives to act to make sure every child, especially zero-dose children, receives routine immunisations. Marionka Pohl, our Global Head of Policy & Advocacy, Health, and Nutrition, shares key insights from the EU Global Health Policy Forum “Deep-Dive” on Global Health within the next EU long-term budget. 💡 Takeaway: Prioritising routine immunisation is essential. Every year, between 12-19 November, we come together to amplify one message: Every child deserves a healthy start in life #ChildHealthWeek. Yet, the reality is heartbreaking—nearly 5 million #children still die each year from preventable causes, despite many of these deaths being avoidable with basic interventions. An additional 2.7 million children were left un- and under-vaccinated in 2023 compared to pre-Covid-19 levels in 2019. While 2022 marked a historic low in #child mortality, our work is far from done. Investing in #health and strengthening health systems (HSS) is essential to change this reality. Global health initiatives like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the The Global Fund and World Health Organization as the leading global health agency, play a crucial role in ensuring access to vaccines, treatments, and primary care that save lives. Yet, the can only fulfill their mandate, when the EU, EU members states, and others step up and ensure adequate, predictable and sustainable #financing for health in the coming years #ODA4Health. (Especially) in times of tightening fiscal space, it is key to align those #HSS efforts, showcase the impact investing in health will have, and discuss innovative financing mechanisms to ensure all children can survive and thrive.
