It was wonderful to have engaged at the National #Security and #Resilience conference in #AbuDhabi… although I didn’t have much time to visit from what I saw the country is quickly developing to be a hub for #Security. It requires a vision to emerge from sand to unique architecture design and build positioning the United #Arab Emirates as one of the leading countries in 21st century. From the conference, here are the three main takeaways: - smart #police, which is largely equipped with robots and #technology for surveillance and monitoring. - real time information and intelligence sharing that allows national #law enforcement regardless of the agency to collaborate and cooperate. - women participation is one that is growing and the UAE has been exemplary given the large presence of women and youth working in #AI and #Security. #Branding #Security Picture: The DG of Interpol and me

The growing democratization of technology is rapidly providing new and dangerous capabilities to violent non-state actors, allowing them to achieve military capabilities that had previously been reserved for states. When carefully integrated into hybrid military-terror campaigns, these can challenge states that insist on maintaining dated misperceptions of their foes…

A dangerous misperception and misunderstanding of the threat. This article focuses on logistics and acquisition and misses a fundamental evolution and understanding of who/what the enemy is. If you fall into the trap of thinking HAMAS is second string terrorist group not a trained and equipped military force of a state actor you might fall for the trap in this article. A good parallel would be not understanding that the Vietnam Cong were a part of the NVA or the National Guard is not part of the U.S. Military. In my opinion that is a fatal and profound misinterpretation of the threat. Until we admit to the painful reality that we are in an undeclared shooting war with Iran we will continue to fail or citizens.

In a collaboration with the Israeli government and military, the startup Corsight has been involved in deploying a comprehensive facial recognition program across the #Gaza Strip. The initiative aims to identify members of Hamas, the group behind the October 7 attack, which remains a prime target for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Amidst ongoing massive attacks in the region, civilian casualties have reached tens of thousands. Corsight claims its technology can identify individuals even if less than 50% of their face is visible. Israeli forces have installed cameras throughout Gaza for this purpose. However, The New York Times and The Verge report significant errors and reliability issues with Corsight's technology, including a case where a Palestinian was wrongly detained and tortured due to a misidentification as one of the October attackers. These incidents highlight the severe risks associated with AI reliance for identification purposes, amid EU regulations banning AI for public space person recognition, barring extreme circumstances such as terrorism. Corsight, founded in 2019 with a $5 million fundraise, also collaborates with authorities worldwide, including in Bogotá, Colombia, showcasing the global footprint of its technology amidst controversies.
