Did you know that healthcare contributes 4-5% of global emissions, surpassing aviation and shipping. Learn more about what the health industry is doing to address this as Elizabeth Sukkar is in conversation with industry leaders as part of Economist Impact’s 4th Sustainability Week: Countdown to COP 29
I had the pleasure of interviewing 3 leaders in health & sustainability: Lutz Hegemann, President of Sustainability at Novartis; Katrine DiBona, Global Head of Sustainability & Public Affairs at Novo Nordisk; & Robert Metzke, Global Head of Sustainability at Philips. At Economist Impact’s 4th Sustainability Week: Countdown to COP 29, we discussed mitigation and adaptation efforts, noting healthcare’s significant environmental impact. From operating theatres to large-scale medicine manufacturing, the sector contributes 4-5% of global emissions, surpassing aviation and shipping. SO, work needs to be done, and fast. At the same time, the sector needs to manage the human health impacts of climate change - the adaptation challenge. Policymakers need to identify how to cut greenhouse emissions while increasing access to quality healthcare. Some of my takeaways from the discussion: Burden-benefit-risk equation: The healthcare sector must provide benefits to patients with the lowest possible environmental burden. It's crucial to frame this correctly. Low-carbon care pathways: This area will likely gain traction in the coming years, with prevention as a key component. Approaches may differ between high-income countries and LMICs. Strengthening prevention, primary care, or tertiary care in equitable and resilient future healthcare systems will be a critical discussion point. Collaboration and regulatory speak: It's important to reconsider what and how we regulate products. Work is underway with regulators to reduce unnecessary plastic use and paper leaflets in medicine packs, potentially replacing them with downloadable, regularly updated leaflets for patient safety. Innovation and Product Design: We discussed the need to consider a product’s carbon footprint much earlier in the design process, understanding how product design and workflows impact the future market. Simultaneously, we must create medicines that are fit for the changing environment (heat stress, infections, etc.) while ensuring accessibility. Scope 3 emissions: These are a major challenge in healthcare. Companies are working on roadmaps and targets, but data transparency and metrics will be key, including data on a product’s life cycle, so healthcare systems/hospitals can compare companies' efforts. Green procurement standards: Governments and agencies should not treat these as an afterthought. They not only regulate but also set standards that can enable the scalability of innovations in decarbonization. We discussed the extent to which “sustainable products” might be perceived as more expensive. #healthcare #sustainability #decarbonisation

Single-use or reusable—what’s more sustainable in healthcare? 🤔 The debate in healthcare is heating up, especially around gastroscopes. 💡 A new study reveals single-use (SU) scopes generate 2.5x the carbon footprint of reusable (RU) ones—primarily due to production and disposal. Yet, RU scopes consume far more water in reprocessing, raising trade-offs in sustainability efforts. ❗ Despite these insights, there are some limitations, such as not assessing clinical outcome. Balancing environmental concerns with healthcare efficiency remains a complex challenge. Full study here: https://lnkd.in/eUuEwKfP
