🌍 Trade and the Path to Net-Zero Emissions 🌍 Trade is a vital tool for achieving net-zero emissions. Nations, regardless of their economic status, are adapting their domestic industrial and trade policies to combat climate change and foster low-carbon industries. Trade allows us to leverage comparative advantages and access global markets, but it also presents challenges in the context of climate change. Our latest policy brief delves into the role of bilateral and multilateral international trade agreements. It examines trade frictions arising from global efforts to decarbonize and adopt greener industry practices under existing trade rules, and highlights a new trend in recent trade agreements. Join us in exploring how trade can be a force for a sustainable future! 🌿📈 Click here to access other publications as well: https://lnkd.in/gGmSbxUW

An exciting discussion took place yesterday at the Berlin office of BASF with the topic on how international trade will develop in times of global instability between war and climate protection. At a time when the WTO is seen by many as a weak player in international trade, World Trade Organization Chief Economist Ralph Ossa stressed that 75 % of international trade is conducted under WTO rules. He strongly advocated for rules-based international trade, arguing that trade should not be seen as a problem towards sustainability, security or climate issues. On the contrary, it can contribute to solving these. Barbara Gessler from the European Commission stressed the importance of the outcome of the European elections for the EU's position among all other players in international trade. Rules-based trade is here to stay - let's work together to ensure that it does.

The WTO has recently published its 2023 World Trade Report, titled “Re-globalization for a secure, inclusive and sustainable future”. The report examines how re-globalization – or increased international cooperation - could address the three major challenges facing today’s global economy: national and economic security, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability. The report argues that global problems require global solutions and more — rather than less involvement in international trade in order to improve resiliency, reduce poverty and inequality and promote environmental sustainability. In contrast to the opinions that emphasize “deglobalization” and the need for more protectionist trade and industrial policies, the WTO report provides a strong counterargument that should be carefully analysed by policy-makers and businesses.
