A Leadership Lesson: I just finished reading Kimberly Strassel's new WSJ column entitled "The Them-vs.-Us Election", and it reminded me of a conversation that I had last Sunday with a new friend of mine. And no, not on politics! We were discussing conflict resolution, and my friend's point was that the first inclination is to attempt to achieve consensus. Which normally doesn't happen. Instead, aggressive or passive-aggressive behavior results. Instead, my friend said, as many different points of view and perspectives as exist within the group should be discussed, compared, and hopefully, understood. Respectfully and considerately. From this process, consensus may occur. Or it may not. But at minimum hopefully all participants will understand the different points of view that exist, and why, and again hopefully find some value in another's viewpoint. It made me think, too, of one of the key value components of a peer group, which is to assemble as many different perspectives, world views, backgrounds, etc. around the table as possible.
