Studying abroad (Erasmus exchange) is an insane experience! 🙌 I expected nothing new from the exchange semester as I have been studying in a foreign country for over 2 years. But I had no clue what was to come. The last 4 months living in the Bohemia-Heart of Europe (Prague, Czech Republic) was nothing less than a wholesome experience. New Culture, New People, New Outlook! There were many struggles to begin with. Firstly, all the paperwork for the exchange was really overwhelming. Then, the worries of moving from Finland to the Czech Republic and making new friends there were always hovering back in my mind cause I was just starting to get comfortable here and was reluctant to go through it again. But I am happy that I did! 😁 I traveled to 4 other countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. But, People were the most essential part of my experience. I met hundreds of students from tens of different nationalities. The group I hung out with was very diverse; we were about 10-15 students, but everyone was from different countries: France, Italy, Finland, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Peru, Germany, and Austria. Insane! International Business is my program at Aalto University, but I always pondered what special we are learning about “International” here. The answer I found after my mandatory exchange is that “ We do not just learn how to do business globally; we subconsciously become more culturally aware and cultivate an open mindset through the multicultural environment.” With this exchange semester, I am about to finish my Bachelor’s studies. I will actively seek new opportunities, but more about it- in 2024 😉 I wish you all a happy New Year, and thank you for staying connected in 2023! 😊 NB: Oh, I forgot to mention that I also studied during the study abroad 🤣🤫 #studyabroad #prague #aaltouniversity

Embracing Change as an International Student 🌍✈️ Moving abroad for study or work is an adventure that promises growth, challenges, and the opportunity to see the world through a new lens. As someone who's navigated this journey, I've learned a few lessons along the way: 1. Cultural Adjustment: Embrace the new culture with an open mind. Attend local events, try new foods, and learn the language. It's these experiences that enrich your journey and broaden your understanding. 2. Financial Planning: Managing finances is crucial. Look for student discounts, budget wisely, and consider part-time work if your visa allows. Remember, it's about experiencing life abroad, not just surviving. 3. Building a Support Network: Connect with fellow international students and locals. Universities often have societies and clubs that can make this transition smoother. Remember, you're not alone on this journey. 4. Staying Connected: While you immerse yourself in a new culture, keep in touch with your roots. Regular calls with family and friends back home can be comforting. 5. Personal Growth: Finally, see every challenge as an opportunity to grow. The skills you develop, from independence to adaptability, are invaluable. To all international students embarking on this journey, remember: it's about more than just education. It's about building a life that's rich in experiences, learning, and connections. #InternationalStudents #StudyAbroad #CulturalAdjustment #FinancialPlanning #PersonalGrowth

Coming to the conclusion of my year abroad I feel it is important to reflect on my time, experiences and all I have gained. I have learned a lot, and that there is much more to be learned out there. In welcome week I decided signing up to sports groups would be a great way to make friends and to enjoy Hong Kong’s natural landscape. Dragon Boat sounded interesting. I never would have thought that this would lead to me falling in love with a new sport, joining a team of passionate students and being able to participate in an international competition representing the Host University HKU. It also allowed me to experience local culture such as the dragon boat festival, private boat races and training camps. As training was almost entirely in Cantonese I picked up some phrases and numbers but mostly relied on translations by fellow students. I now have a renewed respect for anyone who lives in a country which operates in a language which is not their first. I was also worried initially that my academic commitments, finances and lack of knowing anyone before coming to Hong Kong would limit my travel opportunities. However, as came to realise, having the privilege to only study modules that interested me a lot made the workload feel half as heavy a burden. In addition, the Turing fund helped make travel possible! Also, I learned that fellow study abroad students tend to be open, adventure loving and eager travel partners just like me. My interest in politics lead me to study modules such as ‘Politics and Public Opinion’ and ‘China and the World’. These both challenged my western centric view of the world and helped me to develop data processing and written critical analysis skills. The history I learnt alongside these studies has contributed to a deeper global power struggles and inspired many of my travels. Having input from students from East Asian countries was also a major interest of mine and proved to be very thought provoking and enriching. Not every day was easy though. The lessons I learned from moving out in first year about the importance of work-life balance, prioritising friends and preventing physical and mental burn out were tested many times. Creating a completely new social circle, routine and home away from home for myself was not a linear process or a comfortable one. However it has definitely bolstered my self confidence and given me a greater appreciation for my family, home friends and the familiarity of the UK. It hasn’t been easy balancing all these opportunities and commitments. However, this definitely payed off as each and every one of these elements have challenged my intellectual, emotional and even physical resolve and helped me develop a more interdisciplinary, in-depth and global perspective. These skills will no doubt help me finish my degree, help me graduate as a more well rounded individually and inspire future growth. Hong Kong will also always have a special place in my heart. 遲啲見 (ci4 di1 gin3) See you later

Love this read! I find myself encouraging every student I engage with to explore studying abroad. "Humans, as social beings, learn best in situations when the complexity of social reality is encountered, examined, and understood. Interculturally focused travel sets the stage for people to engage in meaningful relationships, opening up opportunities that may otherwise not occur." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gVHbRntK
