Africa has the potential to become a significant player in the global energy market and a strategic partner in the green revolution, thanks to its vast reserves of rare earth minerals and renewable energy resources. Africa is home to abundant renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power. For example, the Sahara Desert receives abundant sunlight, which could provide the continent with abundant solar power. Similarly, the wind potential in Africa is estimated to be sufficient to meet the continent's entire power demands multiple times over. However, only a tiny fraction of this potential has been utilized so far. In terms of rare earth minerals, Africa is rich in resources such as cobalt, lithium, nickel, and rare earth elements. These minerals are essential for the production of clean energy technologies, including electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy systems. Countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania have significant reserves of these minerals. However, to fully realize its potential as a net exporter of energy and a strategic partner in the green revolution, Africa needs to overcome several challenges. These include improving infrastructure, promoting investment in exploration and production, and ensuring that the revenues from these resources are used to reduce poverty and finance core socioeconomic objectives. Additionally, there is a need to strengthen global trade partnerships and value addition within the continent. By addressing these challenges, Africa can leverage its vast energy and mineral resources to drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and contribute to the global transition to clean energy. #Energy

⚡ ZESCO Limited Secures Power Supply from South Africa with Support from GreenCo and First Quantum Minerals 🌍 ZESCO, with financial backing from GreenCo Power Services Limited (GreenCo) and First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQM), has secured additional electricity imports from South Africa to help alleviate Zambia’s energy crisis, driven by record low water levels at Lake Kariba, the country’s main hydroelectric source. This tripartite collaboration will start with 125MW of power imports, potentially increasing to 250MW, fully financed by GreenCo and FQM. Of this, 40MW will be allocated to FQM, while 85MW will support Zambia’s national grid, benefiting households, hospitals, and businesses. As GreenCo’s Head of Business Development, Wezi Gondwe, explains: “This partnership shows how public and private sectors can work together to secure critical energy supplies for both industrial and residential users.” By supporting ZESCO in this critical moment, GreenCo continues its mission of ensuring energy security across the region. Universal energy access remains a significant challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa. The region faces an acute shortage of reliable electricity, with approximately 630 million people lacking access to this fundamental service. Roughly a billion more still cook or heat their homes with charcoal, firewood, and other inefficient, health-threatening biomass-based fuels. This deficit exacerbates vulnerabilities and hinders adaptive capacities and resilience to the effects of climate change. Low access to sustainable energy services in the region results from a complex interplay of factors, with inadequate financing as a common thread running through most of them. Africa’s energy investments only account for 5% of the global total. Despite enormous potential, the region’s renewable energy sector barely takes up 2% of annual global investments. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that 90 million people must be connected to affordable electricity at USD190 billion annually starting from 2026 to achieve universal access in Africa by 2030. This also means that the share of energy investments in Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) needs to exceed 6%.
