Did you miss the Road to Resilience webinar? What a time we had. Thanks so much to the 200 attendees who shared the moment with us yesterday, including bilateral and multi-later donors, university faculty and students, #HDP implementing partners, and representatives from multiple branches of U.S. government. For those who couldn't be there, here's a snapshot: #USAID's Mia Beers shared some of the key learnings that have resulted in USAID's updated resilience policy. FAO's Jocelyn G. Brown Hall talked about the role of resilience approaches in responding to the growing tide of humanitarian need, and Simon Winter of Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture highlighted the critical role of corporate foundations, agribusinesses and farmers themselves in pursuing viable pathways toward resilience. Research experts from Tulane University International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) TANGO International Inc. and the Institute of Development Studies also provided incredibly rich insights on what we are learning--and what we still need to understand—about making gains towards more resilient families, communities and systems. This included discussion on #agrifoodsystems resilience, successes using #graduationmodels and evidence of the protective effects of resilience approaches in mitigating negative coping mechanism in the face of emerging, climate-related shocks. We heard from Margaret Schuler and Mona A. Davies about #WorldVision’s commitment to #transformationaldevelopment, and the role that #THRIVE (a multi-country, market-systems focused program) plays in catalyzing resilience in 11 countries. And it was my distinct privilege to introduce World Vision’s new systems-focused, multi-sectoral framework and white paper for resilience; a companion literature review by Tulane University; and 3 OTHER PUBLICATIONS on range of related themes. UPCOMING SEMINAR | Seeds, food and climate resilience Please join us next Tuesday March 26th for this important panel discussion, in collaboration with Carleton University. Genetically diverse seeds, developed and maintained by Indigenous peoples and farmers over thousands of years, live at the heart of our food systems. The diversity embodied in seed and food system diversity are also key to resilience in the face of a deepening climate emergency. This seminar will explore the importance of #seed and #foodsystem diversity in the face of climate change. Discussion will focus on the steps we can all take, in both policy and practice, as Indigenous Nations, NGOs, governments, farmers, and researchers, to maintain and strengthen this vital connection between people and the more-than-human world we are part of. Insightful outcomes from our DC Symposium! This week we are continuing to highlight our working groups actively engaging in thought-provoking discussions to create practical solutions for agriculture development in Africa. Key discussions and thought processes from the Government and Enabling Environment group include: 📈 Economic Development for Soil Health: The group emphasized leveraging economic development as a means to improve soil health. This approach aims to uplift regions socially while ensuring environmental sustainability. 🤝 Collaboration Across Sectors: The group concluded that achieving the AFSH Summit goals requires cross-sector collaboration. Governments can play a crucial role by creating incentives for partnerships through trade policy and subsidy funding regulations. The Government and Enabling Environment group provided valuable insights into fostering a supportive policy landscape for sustainable agriculture in Africa. Reflections on Leadership in Climate Action and Food Systems 🌍 I recently participated in an insightful webinar hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation’s Big Bets Community, focused on Leadership in Climate Action. As someone working on food and agricultural systems in Africa, I truly resonated with this conversation, especially considering the profound impacts climate change is already having on agriculture and food security across the continent. Key takeaways that inspire me: Collaboration is key: Public-private partnerships are critical to advancing sustainable solutions. Engaging governments, private investors, and local communities is essential for Africa's agricultural sector to build resilience and ensure food systems can adapt to climate shocks. #collaborate Listening as Leadership: We were reminded that listening to farmers and rural communities, particularly women, is central to effective leadership. In Africa’s agricultural sector, those on the frontlines of food production have invaluable insights into what’s working and what needs to change. #begrounded Start Where You Stand: Samantha Karlin’s advice to "start where you stand" hit home. Whether you’re an agricultural extension officer, a researcher, or a policymaker, we each have a role to play in driving climate-smart agriculture. Local solutions driven by community needs are crucial to building sustainable food systems. Hope Through Nature: Claudia Horwitz’s reflection on finding hope through a deep connection with nature is critical. Africa’s smallholder farmers, who are stewards of the land, have much to teach us about resilience, adaptation, and the importance of regenerative agricultural practices that heal the soil and sustain livelihoods. This discussion has only strengthened my belief that sustainable agricultural development in Africa is contingent on climate resilience, local leadership, and inclusive partnerships. We must not waver in our commitment to invest in innovative approaches that empower farmers to not just survive, but thrive, in the face of growing climate challenges. It was a wonderful and inspiring event, especially the African round-table with high ranking personalities indicating different views of the current situation about the latest developments and possible improvement for the agriculture industry in African countries, In our opinion - which was shared by several participants - a very important subject is the fact that too much food is spoil directly after the harvest because of insufficient and ineffective cooling systems. It does not really help to improve the productivity if 40% of the products are lost, spoiled or wasted. Therefore it makes sense to have a look at high-efficient cold chaine systems preferably with ZERO-CARBO Emission. One optimised concept - The Perfect Cold Chain - alone can save appr. 80.000 tons of food per year. Worthwhile to think about it !
