When we are faced with unwelcome changes in our lives like the loss of a job, it can be very hard to see the good in it. And let’s not pretend, there is a lot to not like about it.   Having said that, one of the things I have learned through our partner, Dr. Andy Garrett and his Radical Resilience course, is that when we actively seek to find the benefits in something undesirable, it can have a massive impact on our mental wellbeing and the ability to not just survive a challenge but to actually thrive in the midst of it.   On our weekly group coaching call this week we went through an exercise like this and the results were tremendous. We heard about things like: 🟡“It has given me the opportunity to catch up with long lost friends and colleagues” 🟡“It has given me the time to help my aging parents” 🟡“Through tools like StrengthsFinder, I have discovered qualities and talents I never realized I had before” 🟡“The pause in my routine gave me the space to see that I actually don’t want to do that anymore” The list goes on but the lesson is this.   When one can find meaning in difficult times, one can go through anything with grace. #jobseekers #jobsearch #careercoach

Today’s lifestyle— Nowadays, job life seems to be an endless rush. We are inundated with tasks and concerns as soon as we wake up. Meetings and problem-solving are the normal at work. We remain addicted to our phones even when we're at home, checking messages and planning our next move. We feel exhausted and anxious all the time, like we're on a never-ending treadmill. People used to relax together years ago, but it seems like everyone is too busy these days. We may experience constant fatigue and anxiety as a result of all this stress. Thankfully, more people are talking about mental health these days, and seeking therapy is acceptable. However, we no longer rely on our friends and family as much as we once did. Even though life moves quickly, occasionally pausing can be beneficial. Our minds can benefit from even a short 10-15minutes break from technology when we meditate or play sports. We might feel better in the middle of our hectic lives by taking these short pauses.

Experiencing this and watching people go through this, is the EXACT reason I retired from my job and decided to pursue my business. The name Changing the Climate was referencing the workplace climate. I believe if organizations paid more attention to their employees voice and take action, they could save $$, valuable employees and make the environment much more friendly and change the way people feel about work. So many times, I've heard, if "so and so would leave, everyone would be much happier". Clearly, a toxic employee, a bully or a toxic Rockstar. Let's call management to the table. They should be aware of this behavior and held accountable to take action. Most of the time, no one says anything out of fear of retaliation. Another reason www.changingtheClimate.org exist. We will be the voice!

May is mental health awareness month and I don’t think enough of us are taking this seriously. It’s okay, to not be okay. What is not okay is waiting for someone else to fix what you control. Work ethic > pride. If you’re currently in need of a paycheck, go get a job. Any job!! Go work for a friends small business or at a big box store in the garden center. $15/hr is better than $0/hr. Heck, you might discover a new passion in the process! Mental health > work accolades Grinding for top performer awards or bonuses is short term success and will only bring more work and higher expectations. More stress!! You’re not going to remember the 10+ hour workdays, or always glancing at your phone for that email response. You’re more likely to remember watching a child’s first home run at a Tuesday evening ballgame, or catching a monster trout with your aging parent on a foggy Friday morning. You know your worth and you know your own capabilities. Stop letting other folks judgment of you, based on a single sheet of paper, control your life. You got this! 💪🏻

Let's talk about mental illness and difficult and even painful professional decisions. It has taken me almost six months to grieve, but I am finally ready to share my story about leaving my dream job. Having a mental health condition does not always mean you can't follow your dreams, but it does mean you have to be honest with yourself about your needs, physical and mental resources, passions, and values. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, I have thought a lot about where I am as a woman with serious mental illness and where I have been. I am proud of my choices, and though they have not always been easy, I feel like I have continued to make choices that bring me joy and fulfillment. On this last day of Mental Health Month, I want to share another piece of my story because I know I am not alone in having to make hard choices for my health. I hope you find connection and strength in reading, and I thank all of you who have supported my growth through the years. Please note this post mentions suicidal ideation. 💝 May is Mental Health Month and it's a reminder for me to prioritize self-care. The following confession is hard for me to make, but being good to ourselves allows us to build resilience and move forward with strength and compassion. ⛈️ Last year, navigating a tough divorce, which started in August 2022, left me, a 43-year-old woman, feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Without children or a partner, the journey was and still is very hard and challenging. I find myself in a position where I have to redesign my life and chart a new course for my future. I was surprised to find that my productivity decreased during these hard times, as I've always been used to be a top performer. The constant job rejections, as I want to make a transition to a project manager position from an engineering role, have added to the stress. But these will not stop me to be what I know I can be. 🌈 I'm grateful for the understanding and support I've received from my colleagues and employer during these hard times. I'm fortunate to work for a company that cares about mental health; we have a Mental First Aiders program and an Employee Assistance program that can help any employee struggling through difficult times, both personal and professional. ✔️ It's important to acknowledge that personal issues do influence our professional life, because we are not robots. 🤗 So it's ok not to be ok, it's ok not to be a top performer, it's ok not to be the best version of yourself all the time, it's ok to know that you are not alone in this. 💜 One of my favourite authors, Haruki Murakami said it right..."And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. It's easy to get caught up chasing every job or paycheck that comes our way, but we've got to remember our mental health and self-worth too. When you're picking clients to work with, don't just say yes to everyone. Think about whether they respect you, your limits, and whether you'll have a good working relationship with them. It's okay to say no if it doesn't feel right. Putting your mental health first might seem tough, but it's worth it. Working with clients who care about you makes your job more enjoyable and sustainable in the long run. And never forget your own value. You've got skills and talents that are unique to you, so don't settle for less than you deserve. Stand up for yourself and what you're worth in every job. Let's ensure we're taking care of ourselves as we navigate our careers, making decisions that prioritize our happiness and well-being. This 👇👏 It takes a huge amount of courage to open up to your line manager, employer when you're struggling with you mental health. So much external stigma, self-stigma to battle through. As well as chronic overthinking/worrying/analysing To have the bravery to do it when you're only a month or two into starting a new job takes that courage to another level. Hats off to Fiona to have done just that - I know first hand so many haven't/wouldn't. Following her post below I had the pleasure of chatting to Fiona yesterday. As two people who've had a lifetime of mental health challenges to manage, we found a lot of common ground! Fantastic to see she's putting some brilliant things in place as part of her journey to manage her mental health better. Watch this space :) Last, but no means least, a huge amount of credit to Fiona's line manager, the finance team and her employer Leeds Bradford Airport to have shown how it's done. I wish I could say this type of positive employer experience around mental health is common as it isn't. - A lot of it is down to line managers not feeling like they have the right training, tools to support someone. - Sometimes it's the overriding culture that isn't conducive in making mental health a priority. - Sometimes the line manager doesn't believe in mental health being 'a thing'.
