Qantas is expanding its footprint in Singapore with the announcement of 5x weekly Darwin-Singapore services from 9 Dec 2024. The airline plans to increase the frequency to daily flights from March 2025, pending government and regulatory approval. Interestingly, the route will be operated with an Embraer-190, utilizing QF's existing Darwin-based fleet. Darwin is no stranger to Singapore, currently served by Singapore Airlines with their B737-Max 8s. Qantas Group had also operated this route in the past, with Jetstar Asia's last operation in 2022 and Qantas' in 2006. The new service will arrive into Singapore at 21:25hrs, offering convenient connections to Europe and other parts of Asia. This reinforces Qantas Group's hub in SIN, where operations such as QF1 (SYD-SIN-LHR), codeshare partners (Finnair, Emirates, KLM, Japan Airlines etc), and Jetstar Asia's network are already in place. Today we take a look at the average sector length of Europe's biggest (U)LCCs. AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data for August 2023 and August 2024 shows that Jet2.com and Jet2holidays and SunExpress have the longest average flights. This is not surprising as both are primarily 'holiday' airlines taking northern Europeans to southern Europe. These carriers will typically only manage four sectors per day on their aircraft. The likes of Ryanair and easyJet will usually aim for at least six sectors per day per aircraft. Vueling Airlines (lots of domestic flights in Spain) and Volotea (lots of domestic flights in France, Greece, Italy and Spain) have the shortest average sector lengths. Nine of these 12 airlines saw an increase in average sector length since last summer, the exceptions being the French part of Transavia, Vueling and Wizz Air. Eurowings, Pegasus Airlines, Norwegian

Nice to see Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) move forward with long held ambitions to launch a 2nd Europe route. The timing of Friday's announcement may seem strange given MAG just slashed capacity by 20% to ensure operational stability. However, by the time Paris is launched in late March the group should be on a more solid footing, as I explained in the Astro AWANI interview last week: “Most of the operational issues they have been facing can be resolved in the next few months as they get aircraft back into service. It should be short term ... and the airline will be on a better footing next year.” https://lnkd.in/ekG7b-8R MAG also expects to take delivery of its first 6 A330-900neos by end Mar-2024, freeing up A350 capacity for Paris. Based on current OAG schedules, MAG’s A350 fleet is now used for double daily services to Doha and London along with 2 weekly Narita flights. Doha and Narita are among the initial A330-900 routes. MAG initially planned to use its A350 fleet to launch a 2nd Europe route after London in 2018. At the time Paris was a frontrunner along with Amsterdam. Related CAPA analysis that I wrote in Jun-2017: https://lnkd.in/eCD-Z_Zd Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) dropped Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Paris in 2015/early 2016 as part of a major restructuring that led to the establishment of MAG, replacing MAS. The restructuring also included lease deals for 6 new A350-900s, which were delivered from Nov-2017 to Jul-2018. While MAG quickly implemented the plan to transition both London frequencies from A380s to A350s, the 2nd Europe route never materialized. MAG started relooking at a 2nd Europe route in 2022 with initially Istanbul the frontrunner. However, the launch of Doha in May-2022 was so successful it decided to add a second Doha frequency in Aug-2022 instead of moving forward with a new Europe route. MAG therefore continued to use A350s for medium haul routes (prior to COVID it was Narita, Osaka and Sydney). A 7th A350 (a used ex-SAS -900) was added in late 2023, resulting in 28 widebodies including 15 A330-300s and 6 ex-Air Berlin A330-200s (added in 2018). Prior to the restructuring MAS had 34 widebodies, including the same 15 A330-300s, 13 777-200ERs and 6 A380s (taken back by Airbus as part of the 2022 deal for 20 A330-900s). MAG’s widebody capacity was 94% recovered in Aug-2024 (vs Aug-2019), based on OAG data. But overall international seat capacity was 103% recovered last month (prior to the recent cuts), due to more 737 flights and 737 densification. MAG now has 51 737s (includes 4 MAXs) vs 48 in 2019. MAG now has 57 international destinations & 62 routes (excludes charters) vs 47 & 53 in Sep-2019. MAG has been expanding its international network over the last year, launching 13 destinations with a focus on South Asia & SE Asia. Paris will not be easy commercially as SE Asia-Europe market conditions are now normalizing. However, Paris will help feed Australia/NZ and MAG’s expanded regional network.

📌 Lufthansa Group extends wet lease partnership with airBaltic The Lufthansa Group is extending its collaboration within the framework of a wet lease partnership with its long-standing and proven partner airBaltic for a further three years beyond the summer of 2025. This partnership enables to flexibly deploy up to 21 additional aircraft of the fuel-efficient Airbus A220-300 in summer and five aircraft of this type in winter at various hubs. Due to changing customer needs, the Lufthansa Group airlines are aligning their route networks to seasonal peaks in demand, particularly in the summer timetable. With the additional capacities of airBaltic, destinations in high demand in the route networks can be served even more flexibly in future. At the same time, this will strengthen the quality of connections to Lufthansa Group Airlines' intercontinental services at the Group's hubs. As is usual with a wet lease, the aircraft and crews will be provided by airBaltic. airBaltic is Latvia’s national and largest airline with its headquarters and hub in Riga. The Lufthansa Group has been working with airBaltic since 2019, which has proven itself to be a reliable and valuable partner. #aviation

Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) has been chosen by Malaysia Airlines (MH) as its latest destination for a weekly full freighter cargo service with the first inbound flight set to arrive from Kuala Lumpur in early April. The scheduled weekly flight will use the relatively fuel-efficient and quieter MH Airbus A330F and make MST only the second airport in Europe that MH flies to, after Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (AMS). “This is an important opportunity for MST, as since Royal Schiphol Group (RSG) invested in 40 percent of the airport last year, we have seen our operations consistently growing,” said Jonas van Stekelenburg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MST. Belgium 🇧🇪 used to be an important stopover point for Jet Airways’ India to #NorthAmerica operation. A few reasons explain the unusual choice: ✈️ An attractive offer from #BRU ✈️ #Slot availability (during the peak morning hours) ✈️ #Transit opportunities At its peak at the end of 2008, the Jet Airways route network ex-Brussels spanned 4 destinations in #India & 3 in the #US & #Canada. 🌎 The hub became key to 9W’s long-haul operations & made EBBR very busy in peak morning hours. ⏰ It wasn’t smooth sailing all the way for the Jet Airways operation in Brussels, however. #Bengaluru was dropped months after its launch, while #Chennai and #NewYorkJFK were axed in 2012. It was even more challenging once #BrusselsAirlines joined #StarAlliance & #Etihad joined forces with 9W. According to AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium airline schedules data for March to October 2024, airlines have already announced plans to launch well over 600 new routes involving European airports. Leading the way with well over 100 is, no surprise, Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline. Then comes easyJet, Volotea, Norwegian and Jet2.com and Jet2holidays all with at least 30 new routes planned. But where is Wizz Air? The last three years (2021-2023) has seen the carrier launch more new European routes than any other carrier except Ryanair. Are we about to get a batch of new route launch press releases from Wizz Air, or is this a year of consolidation for the airline?
