Douglas Wilson is once again a Plenary speaker at Repairing the Ruins 2024! He will speaking on Rene Girard, St. Anselm, and the Crackle of Envy: "Our work in ACCS is a crucial front in our modern culture wars. As you cannot fight a naval war without ships, or conduct tank warfare without tanks, so it is impossible to have a culture war if we are missing a culture. The ACCS is in the front lines of a most necessary rearmament. The situation is dire—it is like Britain trying to rearm in the thirties. But it is not enough to have old books, Latin courses, and classical music. Cultures need an immune system against the deadliest culture disease, which is envy. And to understand that properly, we need to take a look at Girard and Anselm." Join us June 19-22 in Atlanta. Register before April 30th for early bird pricing. repairingtheruins.org

In the annals of maritime history, the Basilisk Passage at coordinates 9°32'10"S, 147°7'50"E emerges not only as a geographical point but as a narrative woven with tales of resilience and strategic significance. During World War II, it bore witness to the protective gaze of four-inch naval guns on Paga Hill and the road to Idler's Bay. Fast forward to the present, and the Basilisk Passage faces a new chapter, one marked by the challenges posed by its narrow confines. As plans unfold for updates in Port Facilities, a crucial aspect comes to light—the need to widen the passage. An anecdote from recent times adds depth to this narrative. Attempting to navigate the Basilisk Passage with a larger vessel—a formidable LNG Carrier boasting a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 114,000 and a Length Overall (LOA) of approximately 300 meters—revealed the inherent risks. The passage, once a safeguarded haven, now posed a significant challenge, forcing a reluctant retreat from the ambitious plan due to the narrowed passage after the breakwaters. This episode underscores the urgency of addressing the narrowness of the Basilisk Passage. The abortive attempt to bring in a sizable LNG Carrier serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting not just the current limitations but the immense potential awaiting untapped behind those constricted waters. By incorporating this real-life account, we shed light on the practical implications of the passage's limitations. It emphasizes that the call for widening isn't merely theoretical but a necessity grounded in the lived experiences of those navigating the seas of progress. The Basilisk Passage, with its historical weight and contemporary challenges, beckons for thoughtful development—expanding its horizons for the vessels of today and tomorrow. #shippingindustry #MaritimeIndustry #papuanewguinea #Basiliskpassage #portmoresby

On International Clinical Trials Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on a captivating tale from the annals of medical history. Imagine it is the year 1747. Aboard the HMS Salisbury, the air is thick with despair as scurvy ravages the crew. Enter James Lind, a visionary Scottish surgeon who believed that hope could be found through methodical inquiry and experimentation. With 12 ill sailors and a hunch, Lind embarked on what would become the first recorded clinical trial. He divided the sailors into pairs, treating each with different regimens. Amidst the various remedies, one stood out to be effective—citrus fruits. Those who received them recovered remarkably, a discovery that would change the course of naval history and save countless lives. Fast forward to today, and we at N-of-1 Hub carry Lind’s torch, as one of the pioneers of use of personalised clinical trials. Like Lind, we face skepticism and challenges, but we persist, driven by the belief that every body is different. As we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, let’s honour the spirit of discovery and chart a course towards a healthier future for all. Join us at N-of-1 Hub as we set sail on this noble quest, one patient, one trial, one victory at a time - visit www.n-of-1hub.com. #ClinicalTrialsDay #Nof1Trials #HealthcareInnovation #JamesLind #MedicalHistory Dr Suzanne McDonald Associate Professor Jane Nikles
