This weeks poll results are in! 🥁 We asked Kate Dodwell, one of our Senior Recruitment Consultants her opinion, here's what she said: "I'd say technical skills but interpersonal are just as important. Technical skills are important to for the direct part of the job. If, for instance, you are a production manager of a team of operators and technicians, a knowledge and background in diagnostics and machine maintenance, plus an understanding of the tools, would be beneficial to the fulfilment of every aspect of the role. However, interpersonal skills add that touch of humanity to your role. Human relations are just as important. Knowing you can communicate clearly, can offer support and encouragement, and actively make efforts to develop your staff, will show you to be an approachable leader with an understanding of people." Definitely food for thought! Come back Monday for a new topic to vote/discuss 👋 #poll #jobmarket #foodforthought

COO, CisLunar Industries | P&L | Board | Scientist | TEDx Speaker | Energy | Space | Resources | Defense
I started my career with Texaco in New Orleans, prospecting for natural gas under the guidance of my mentor, Cliff Crowe, who passed away last year. Our boss really liked one of my prospects, so we secured a drilling permit. My boss's boss approved the project, so it was time to go to his boss to get the well added to the budget. At the end of my big presentation, my boss's boss's boss promptly bravadoed, "You'd have to be drunk or on drugs to drill that well." I shot back, "If it doesn't work, you can fire me." He raised an eyebrow, but the conversation was over. He didn't put up the money. I'm still not sure what I was thinking when I said that. Maybe his brash dismissal changed the room, and I changed with it. Or maybe I craved the kind of accountability that can lead to big opportunities, even that early in my career. By exaggerating the penalty for failure, was I also silently suggesting an exaggeration of the reward in the success case? Was I really initiating a custom employment negotiation with a company that had 125,000 employees? No matter. No dice. We soon farmed out the prospect to a partner company, which drilled the well we had permitted. It made millions. Many, many millions. The reservoir I had found with Cliff’s help didn’t puff its last gasp of production until 2019. That memory came back to me when I saw these two Texaco gas pumps at the #SSIB conference a few weeks ago. It was a timely reminder. Next week, I'll be back in New Orleans to speak at the The Aerospace States Association Annual Meeting. For the first time in two decades, I'll walk by that old Texaco building, which we affectionately called "The Dark Side," and think about that story and other formative moments that happened there. In my knee-jerk negotiation that day, I apparently did split-second math on what my sparring partner might value: cockiness. But I didn’t have any leverage. Firing me was a power he could already exercise at will. All my statement really had was entertainment value, which admittedly paid dividends in team dynamic in the years that followed. Whenever I give a presentation now, I build it with the audience in mind. What drives them? What are their problems and concerns? What are they trying to accomplish? How does that all match up with what I’m trying to accomplish? What is the size of the prize and what might stand in the way of alignment? I still miscalculate sometimes, but every time I walk in someone else’s shoes, I move ahead. And the shoes go back to them broken in, comfortable, conducive to dancing. Goodbyes are never easy...... My last day with SEMCO ENERGY is on Friday, I will be transitioning to a new role with MISSDIG 811. I have learned so much from this incredible group of people. Here are some of the experiences and skills they have taught me; 1.) No matter what organization you are a part of it all comes down to people. The foundation of trust ensures that you can build to different points of views and engagement. (Mark VanderHeuvel and Greg Stroh). 2.) Transparency and stewarding a healthy company culture is critical in a leader. (Marc Simone). 3.) Focusing on data that identifies trends proactively allow you to be successful in your mission (Also Marc Simone). 4.) Don't allow your teams to suffer in silence. (Greg Stroh and all Operations Managers). We experienced some critical emergencies and SEMCO's operations team is always there, and ready to perform. I will miss all team members, especially those on the Emergency Management, Health and Safety and Security Teams, however having great leaders like Darcy Falkowski and Bryan Elenbaas make it a comfortable transition. My new role officially begins on February 19th, however we are conducting a member townhall on February 15th, hope to see you there. Marc Simone, Mark VanderHeuvel, Philip Lenn, Darcy Falkowski. Bryan Elenbaas.

🤔 CAN YOU RELATE TO THIS? - (Chicagoland Area) I was talking with someone last week who loves working closely with their clients on projects and mentoring their team. They were frustrated because their boss kept pushing them to get more involved with business development and was then on them about getting their utilization up. This person loved being a senior consultant/project manager and advising their clients, while helping their team grow, and just wanted to keep on doing that. I have an opportunity with an employee-owned company that lets people play to their strengths. 💥 You'd be a key person working closely with Fortune 200’s and 1000’s 💥 2 out of the last 3 people in this position were promoted 💥 Directing and shaping strategies on multi-million-dollar remediation projects 💥 Paying $150,000 - $190,000, and not asking for a book of business If you're open to hearing about this opportunity, I would love to tell you more about it if you’re interested.
