When looking to bring a dog into your life, remember that adopting is a compassionate choice. There are countless dogs waiting for their forever homes in shelters and rescue organizations. By adopting, you not only give a loving home to a deserving dog but also help reduce the demand for puppy mills and unethical breeding practices. Choose adoption, not shopping, and give a dog a second chance at a happy, loving life. https://lnkd.in/eXNutPbZ

When adopting an animal please be mindful that the animal you are bringing home has likely spent time in a shelter or noisy environment. The absolute worst thing you can do is run them to a dog park right after adoption or bring them to a crowded gathering. These actions can cause the animal to be fearful and not do well in the situation. Too many pets are adopted and returned a few days later because the new adopter expected them to jump right into their life and be perfect. They need time. Give your new pet time as indicated below so that they can feel confident with you and safe when venturing out to new activities. #adoptionsuccesd #newenvironments #dorchesterpaws

Bringing a rescue dog home- go for slow and predictable walks. 🐕🚶🏻♀️ In Part 1 of our #TrainingARescueDog series- here's why it is important to go for slow and predictable walks with your new rescue dog. 🏡 Although you know the area that you live in, your newly adopted dog doesn't! Every house, sidewalk, street, tree, bush, flower, and other animal is brand new to them, making walks incredibly overwhelming. For around the first month after you've adopted your new dog, take them for slow and predictable walks around your home and community. What does that mean? 🏘️Walking the same route for a few weeks ⏰Only going for 20 to 30-minute walks 🌸 Walking very slowly to help your dog sniff 🐕 Using treats on walks to create sniffing opportunities Slow and predictable walks will help your dog learn about the new area that they live in and will highly reduce their fear and stress levels during the critical adjustment period. After your dog knows the usual routes around your home, slowly start taking your dog to new locations around your community and then outside your community. 💙 Small steps to success! #WelfareForAnimals #RescueDogs #Dogs #FearfulDogs #AdoptedDogs #ShelterDogs #SniffyWalks

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month 🐾 At the Edmonton Humane Society, we know how much our canine companions enrich our lives. Their wagging tails, boundless energy and unconditional love bring so much joy and comfort to our days. This month, let's spread awareness to help educate people about the responsibilities of dog ownership, and help current guardians enhance their relationships with their pets. Here are a few simple ways we can be responsible dog guardians: - Schedule regular vet visits for preventive care. - Provide nutritious food and fresh water. - Ensure identification and licences are up to date. If you're in the City of Edmonton, don’t forget to keep your pet’s licence current. On World Animal Day, we are happy to share, 'Am I ready for dog ownership?' Universal self-awareness and education tool for would be dog owners. The series of self-reflecting questions will make us aware of the responsibilities of dog ownership/guardianship and also help us self-assess whether we are ready for this big step. This tool will not take into account or collect our name or email address in any matter whatsoever. Link to the tool https://lnkd.in/dWWV-xqe The tool is also embedded on our website www.bridgingrainbows.org for free usage. Help share the tool, create awareness and help save lives. Countless dogs either bought or adopted are abandoned on the streets or languish in shelters. We thank Billie Groom, Meenakshi Das, Mindy Dutka for their valuable inputs and Denise Boehler and Jennifer L. Pavlovic for their exhaustive analysis that helped in shaping this resource. This is a Bridging Rainbows Foundation initiative dedicated to an old, abandoned and rescued dog named Bada Kaan. #WorldAnimalDay #humananimalbond #dogs #awareness #education #tool #resource

Bringing a rescue dog home- let them sniff! 🐕 In part 1 of our new #TrainingARescueDog- here's how to help your new rescue dog through their adjustment period. 💤 After your dog has had time to decompress, with lots of rest and sleep, give them sniffing opportunities so that they can learn about their home to perceive the world around them without any forced interactions. What do sniffing opportunities look like? 🏡 Walking them around your home and tossing treats or using snuffle mats to help your new dog use their nose in new rooms. 👚 Placing your routine clothes around your home like on the couches, bed, or even on the floor for your dog to investigate and become adjusted to your smells. 🌸 Letting your dog take as long as they need safely in the garden/yard. 🐕 Creating sniffing opportunities in your back and front yard, if needed on a leash, by tossing treats around. 🌲 Walking super slow on small and predictable walks so that your dog can sniff every tree, bush, flower, and blade of grass By taking the time to let your dog sniff, you are giving them the chance to understand through chemical communication, every dog, cat, wild animal, and person who lives in the area. It will also help regulate your dog's nervous system as they go through the shock of leaving the shelter, rescue, or foster home and being moved into your home- where everything is new to them. Next week, we will talk about the importance of slow, predictable walks What sniffing opportunities do you provide for your newly adopted rescue dogs? #WelfareForAnimals #RescueDogs #Dogs #ShelterDogs

Adopting a senior dog is an act of compassion that comes with numerous benefits. From the predictability of their temperament to the deep sense of loyalty and gratitude they show, senior dogs can enrich their adopters' lives in countless ways. They offer a relaxed and often more manageable companionship compared to younger dogs and come with the added benefit of potentially already being trained and housebroken. The emotional satisfaction of giving an older dog a second chance at a happy life is immense, making the adoption of senior dogs a rewarding and fulfilling choice for many individuals and families. By adopting a senior dog, you not only gain a loyal companion but also make a profound difference in the life of an animal in need. If you have lost a beloved pet in the past and are ready to welcome a new furry friend into your family, consider adopting - don't shop! Change the life of a pet in need. #adoptdontshop #cats #dogs #pets #petadoption #petsarefamily #petmemorial #seniordogs #animalrescues #animalshelters

For every packet of Pawfect food or treat you purchase, a portion of our revenue is dedicated to initiatives focused on the welfare of stray dogs. By choosing Pawfect, you're not only providing your pet with the finest, most nutritious, and meaty treats—they #love— but you're also contributing to a larger cause: helping improve the lives of stray dogs across communities. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the legislation in December 2022, but the new law doesn't take effect until December 2024. Puppies, kittens and bunnies can no longer be sold in pet shops. December 31, 2024, is just around the corner. Has any major organization made a public statement about the well-being of animals that are unsold on this day, the last day of December? One year ago, I asked this question in the same forum just out of curiosity. If anybody has been putting a plan together and has not received a solid response, I shall ask the question again. Is anyone aware of any major organization or rescue organization? If our rescues and shelters are red-lining and beyond capacity, where will all the puppies, kittens, and rabbits in New York State end up? What is the plan to ensure the well-being of unsold dogs, kittens, puppies, and rabbits left in stores on December 31, and why has this plan not been made public so volunteers/fosters can offer to help? If our rescues and shelters are overflowing and beyond capacity, where will all the puppies, kittens, and rabbits in New York State end up? #pets #petrescue
