The true opposite to suicide is living a great life that is worth living. Everyone is aware of the statistics--approximately 140 Americans will die by suicide today, with about 22 of those being military personnel or veterans. We've lost more military and veteran personnel to suicide than we did to combat in the Vietnam War. The data is sobering and scary, but there are resources out there that are making a difference. The Warrior PATHH program at the Boulder Crest Foundation is a 90-day, non-pharmacological, peer-delivered training program designed to help our nation's warriors turn their struggles into strength using the science of Posttraumatic Growth. The cavalry is coming Recently an American friend told me an interesting story. In the early days when Westerners started arriving in America, tensions with the indigenous people were inevitable and frequent. Being outnumbered, these early settlers had to rely on cowboys trotting guns and riding on horses aka cavalry for protection. Hence, in moments of distress they often assured each other “the cavalry is coming”. Although those days are long over, hope is what keeps people alive in dire situations. On August 5, 2010, Chile's century-old San José mine caved in, burying 33 miners underground at a depth almost twice the height of the Empire State Building. Miraculously all of them survived the 69-day ordeal on the hope that help is on its way. But “the cavalry is coming” also begs two questions. The first is what if the cavalry doesn’t come or it comes too late? There is a Chinese saying (远水救不了近火) which points to a simple truth: when a house is on fire one can’t rely on help coming from far away. Hence, it is critical to build individual resilience. The second question is this: can we be the cavalry that someone is waiting for? If so, are we willing? What are we waiting for?

Why is it that so few people follow their own star? Why is the star such a heavy burden? Because following your own star means isolation, not knowing where to go, having to find out a completely new way for yourself instead of just going on the trodden path everybody else runs along. That's why there's always been a tendency in humans to project the uniqueness and the greatness of their own inner self onto outer personalities and become the servants, the devoted servants, admirers, and imitators of outer personalities. It is much easier to admire a great personality and become a pupil or follower of a guru or a religious prophet, or an admirer of a big, official personality-a president of the United States-or live your life for some military general whom you admire.
