I found this interesting. The shade giving tree is planted on the private property side of the fence, but the shade is also enjoyed by the pedestrians. I was walking down this pavement yesterday during the height of the heatwave, and this patch of the pavement felt considerably cooler and was such a relief. Too bad that the pavement was too narrow and could not accommodate a bench to sit and get a bit of a respite. Also, there was only one such shade giving tree planted on the private side of the fence. Wish there were many more which would have been such a relief for pedestrians. How can we make this into incentive compatible/ public spirited public-private partnerships so that we can scale such arrangements? I think such an approach could be promising for pavements in cities where there may not be enough public space for shade giving tree plantation.

Lady Liberty looks pretty good for her age, but the 200-year-old fort that serves as her base has seen better days. The cold and windy conditions in New York Harbor, combined with storms and sea water, are tough on structures, and Fort Wood is no exception. Currently, about 50,000 highly visible square feet of walking surface at the fort are in disrepair, meaning the site can't provide adequate accessibility for visitors. An investment from the Great American Outdoors Act will change that and make the site safer for its 3 million annual visitors. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help.
