Greetings all! I've been asked several times recently about the timing of my next post, so here goes. The definition of the word technology is "the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes." If you think about it, that definition is spot on. I've had the privilege over the past few months to see this in action with a company based in Indianapolis called Taranis. For many years both farmers and ag retailers have been working together so both can achieve success. However, once a crop emerges, neither the grower nor the retailer really knows what is happening in those fields to the extent they would like to - this can lead to less-than-ideal decision making when it comes to stand count issues or decisions with inputs such as crop protection and fertilizer products. Taranis solves this problem for both parties, using technology. Using drones, satellites, high resolution cameras, and groundbreaking software, stand counts, weeds, diseases, insects, and nutrition issues are seen from the sky - something a Ph.D. friend recently told me "Steve, this is what the ag industry has been waiting for - a "birds eye view" of the fields with amazing clarity.
