EXPLAINED: EUDR 🌳 🌳 🌳 Large-scale deforestation and forest degradation are key drivers of two of the greatest challenges of our time, which are inextricably linked: Climate change and biodiversity loss. As part of the Green Deal, the EU has set out to eliminate deforestation from global supply chains and promote the adoption of more sustainable land-use practices. Tackling deforestation is crucial if we want to achieve our climate goals. The Forest 500 annual report from Global Canopy analyses the progress made by companies and financial institutions to combat deforestation. The report seeks to evaluate the commitments made by 500 organisations around the world and their efforts towards ending deforestation. End of #UNEA-6 where the Belgian Presidency and the international community committed to tackling the triple global crisis. How? By endorsing a series of multilateral actions to combat climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Important resolutions piloted by the BE Presidency were adopted on:     ➡️ Implementing effective and inclusive solutions to support and develop water policies at all levels; ➡️ Strengthening ocean governance efforts for the protection and conservation of our marine and coastal environments.

It is with satisfaction I look back on 2 weeks of negotioating this landmark UNEA resolution on Water. At UNEA6 we had a strong and committed EU team tirelessly working towards a consensually agreed water resolution highlightning: - implementing IWRM at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation - mainstreaming sustainable water management - enhancing the collection and monitoring of water-related data - noting the global water cycle - integrating IWRM in agriculture and large water consuming industry sectors - encouraging SDG6-related investments - scaling up UNEP's water programme in coherence with UN Water https://lnkd.in/edzSJJrC #SDG6 #UNEA6 #IWRM #globalwatercycle #UNEP #UNWATER

The European Council's draft Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 raises significant concerns regarding biodiversity and climate action. Of concern is the lack of consideration of biodiversity and the minimal focus on climate change, which is shifted primarily to adaptation measures. These decisions have far-reaching implications as they not only shape EU policy, but also influence the allocation of funds under the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). IFAW calls on Member States to address these issues and incorporate a stronger EU commitment to the environment in the agenda of the next political term. The European Union must ensure that nature-based solutions and conservation efforts are prioritised to protect our planet's biodiversity and tackle the urgent challenges of climate change.
