It’s critical that strong female leaders continue to mentor and inspire young women and men (so they can normalize the concept of women in leadership, director, CEO, CAO, partner and president roles - a female in a leadership role shouldn’t be a breaking news item - it should just BE). Also agree that solidarity is so vital! It’s critical that as women, we continue to mentor one another, build our colleagues up, support one another in our successes, and stand tall together.
Our fourth and final fact sheet exploring the data from our Empowering Women and Girls project expands on the insights related to female leadership and solidarity. With gratitude to all of the women leaders that participated in this study and offered their rich perspectives and experiences! Also thanks to our lead researcher, Kristin S. Williams, Ph.D., and our researcher associate, Nina Winham. Here’s the next illustration in our series for United Nations Foundation and Our Future Agenda focusing on the systemic and structural barriers young people face in meaningful engagement and leadership in decision-making processes 🚧👥 💭 This session emphasizes the importance of challenge mapping to break down information into specific, actionable problems. It’s crucial to address the unique obstacles, risks, and factors impacting the future well-being of young individuals, especially in the context of SDG implementation. 📈 The conversation highlights the need for more investment in research and building evidence to identify gaps and prioritize challenges. We discussed the role of data in empowering youth and achieving the SDGs. ⚡️ To cultivate a generation of changemakers, we must foster empathy, create feminist spaces, and provide opportunities that resonate deeply with the youth’s passions. 🌍 (Graphic Recording, Youth, SDGs) 🌿 “The future is intergenerational and intersectional. We need to involve young people actively and give full ownership of ideas to the future generation.” - Aya Chebbi

As a fellow of the International Science Council, I was invited to provide a quote for the Summit of the Future, and here’s my reflection: "To create a brighter future, we must embrace new, forward-thinking visions and frameworks, free from the constraints of outdated rules. Learning from the past and committing to fairness and equality instead of perpetuating inequality, we can foster true integration and achieve a brighter future." However, my optimism is dimmed by the recurring lack of inclusivity at such summits. In almost every science diplomacy event, we see the same faces and ideas being repeated. There’s a mistaken belief that repeating the same ideas, no matter how flawed will eventually make them impactful. I say this frankly: leadership is not about repeating the past mistakes. True leadership means addressing and empowering all voices, including those unheard. It means rejecting the urge to govern others based on race, gender, ideology, religion, and other labels. These distinctions do not elevate one individual over another. Real leadership is grounded in equality and humanity. If we want a common future, we must learn from the past and make decisions that honor the dignity and rights of all, without exception. I emphasize: Learn from the past otherwise there is no common future.
