What if you could get up close and personal with some of Australia's most unique creatures and plants, all in the name of work? With our Ecology team, you can! Check out some of the native flora and fauna our team has encountered in their work enhancing biodiversity across the country. 🐸 Images: Thanks to Emi Arnold, Angus Houston, Justin Pegg, Imogen Merlo and Michelle Patrick #Ecology #Biodiversity #WithWSPYouCan #WeAreWSP

Just wrapped up an incredible workshop on molecular ecology network analysis using eDNA as a conservation tool! 🧬🌍 It's mind-blowing how we can now uncover hidden connections between species and assess ecosystem health by simply analyzing traces of DNA in the environment. This powerful tool is a game-changer for conservation efforts! Excited to apply this knowledge to protect our planet's biodiversity. #eDNA #conservation #molecularEcology #workshop #newskills #excitedtolearn

Algal blooms can be found in fresh water and salt water, growing rapidly and causing harm to people, animals, and the local ecology. NBOT destroys harmful algae while increasing dissolved oxygen for healthier water in a way that is 100% natural. 🐼 PAPER ALERT 🐼 New paper out in Nature Ecology & Evolution titled 'Niches beyond borders' by professor at CMEC David Nogues Bravo. 🐼 In the paper David delves into the biases affecting predictions for future biodiversity change. He emphasizes that our limited knowledge on species' niches challenges our ability to forecast biodiversity changes. Read the paper here! 👇 https://lnkd.in/es4sT3Yy

*Enhancement is key* ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ With the weather finally showing its potential and the sun shining, we began some reptile receptor site enhancement today. The goal is to aerate the soil and spread tussocky grassland seed mixture to improve reptile suitability. Tomorrow, we will be constructing log piles to further enhance the receptor site. Just one of many successful biodiversity projects completed by our team at ES Mitigation and Management. 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃 Ecology Solutions Group. #biodiversity #landscaping #ecology #mitigation

🦊 New paper alert 🐺 New paper out in Trends in Ecology & Evolution by CMEC Associate Professor Naia Morueta Holme, led by Morten Limborg, and co-authored by Caroline Sophie Winther-Have, Thomas P. Gilbert and Jacob A. Rasmussen. The paper titled "The overlooked biodiversity loss" highlights the loss of 'invisible biodiversity'. When a species is lost, the microbes associated with it also risk extinction. As a consequence, any potential benefits those microbes might offer to other hosts (including humans) could also be lost. 🌱 This is California Native Plant Week, hosted by California Native Plant Society! Great Ecology regularly uses native plants in our ecological designs and restoration and mitigation projects. 🌳 There are a huge number of reasons to plant native plants, at home, in projects, or wherever you require new flora. Native plants help to conserve water, protect soil from erosion, create habitats and provide food for birds, pollinators, and small animals. 🦆 Interested in learning more about the importance of native plants and the California Native Plant Society? My paper "Niches beyond Borders" is now out in the current issue of Nature ecology & evolution. Here I discuss the idea of "ghost niches" and the possibility that extinction-risk estimates ignoring those ghost niches may be biased. To surpass this grand challenge I propose to use historical records of species distribution and environmental conditions to unveil those ghost niches and improve future scenarios for biodiversity change https://lnkd.in/drYAPig4 Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate (CMEC) Globe Institute #publication

A wonderful picture of the four-spot chaser dragonfly (Libellula quadrimaculata) taken by our ecologist Claire Smith while undertaking ecology surveys in Northeast Scotland. These adaptable dragonflies can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, canals, and slow-moving streams. These remarkable insects play a vital role in the balance of our eco-system, helping to key populations of midges and other flying insects in check. While they themselves are an important food source for birds, fish and other insectivores. All of which keeps the food chain functioning smoothly. #SustainableDevelopment #ecologyife #biodiversity
