In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” WTOP’s Matt Kaufax slipped on his “blue suede shoes” and headed to The Wharf to find out more about Elvis Presley’s one and only performance in the District. Dubbed as one of the hardest-to-find markers in Washington, the small plaque that commemorates Presley’s only performance in D.C. is barely wider than a couple of bricks. Embedded in the tiles of the walkway on Wharf Street in Southwest, it’s also incredibly easy to miss. Find more episodes of "Matt About Town" on WTOP: https://lnkd.in/eGVnHuSS

Setting goals may be easy, but making them stick? That’s the real challenge. We’ve taken the corporate concept of S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) and adapted it to our family life (but NOT just creating a big plan only to let it gather dust on a shelf). Ring time is that element that can often make or break a business. As Chris O'Brien says, we’re all impatient and want immediacy. Especially during crises, every minute is important. And for every minute potential clients’ calls aren’t picked up, that’s more time they have to choose your competitor over you. Check out this snippet for more on the topic and tune in for the full episode on CaptureNow’s solution to this pressing problem. Now live: https://lnkd.in/eskvsSWi

The past two commutes I’ve worked my way through this amazing episode of The Imperfects with Nathan Buckley. Stoic, ruthless, tough, unforgiving and elite summarise Nathan as a footballer and coach. However, it’s amazing to hear him talk about the human that he is inside and behind that armour that he put up throughout his career. One of my favourite quotes from the episode is in this video evidently. When speaking about seeking help he mentions therapy, external support or reaching out as finding someone who is able to connect with you, support you and “hold the mirror up for you so you can work things out yourself”. As teachers and educators sometimes we forget this is our job. Working in Wellbeing especially, we can be quick to rush in, solve the problem so it’s off of our to-do list or so that status quo is restored. Sometimes we remove the friction and the struggle for our students and staff, when really, we actually need to be the one that “holds the mirror up” for students and staff around us. Eventually, this helps them to learn to develop the necessary skills to solve their own problems effectively. Competence and confidence rather than reliance! Thankfully I finished listening to this on the way to work this morning and I had three brilliant conversations with students where I tried out this technique. I listened and held the mirror up. I feel the outcomes I had were far greater than if I’d just fixed the problem and sent them on their way, or just stuck to a script hoping for a result or a “win”. Both conversations centered around not being perfect, making mistakes and learning to fix them ourselves by building skills. Connection and communication were at the heart of all three conversations! Definitely give this podcast a listen if you need some inspiration or want to hear a bit about vulnerability and help seeking skills.
Asking for help isn’t always easy, but boy does it come with its upsides. This week, The Imperfects are joined by AFL legend Nathan Buckley (Bucks), who sits down to reflect on his high-performance career, shifting from criticism to compassion, and the importance of asking for help. No is a complete sentence. It all starts with this simple word: No. Derek Sivers once coined the idea that if something isn't a Hell Yes, it’s a No. But, being a bit more vulgar like Mark Manson, I prefer to call it the Law of "F*ck Yes or No." *** Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gQ6n9_ME
