Before starting FACTEUR, I worked in-house for most of my career and alongside dozens of agencies. And I still believe that one of the biggest benefits of working with an agency isn't just having them "do the work" but also learning from them. Having access to decades of combined experience at your fingertips, working on your brand all at once – super valuable, no? I know it can be a challenge as we're all moving so quickly, but I believe you can still learn a lot from an agency as you go. Here are a few ways... 1. Consistently communicate. At FACTEUR, we do all of our client calls on Mondays. During those meetings, we don't spend as much time on status updates – we share those Fridays – but on discussion. This is a great opportunity to talk to your agency partners about trends in the industry, best practices, and recommendations. A great question to ask during those discussions? "What are we learning about this project/campaign/outreach/results?" 2. Remember that learnings are not just quantitative but also qualitative. Everyone wants to see numbers, myself included, but numbers alone don't tell the whole story. I know PR is different from other disciplines, but this is why we have a lot of "words" in our monthly reports, not just a spreadsheet of numbers. You can often learn more from the feedback of a journalist than the pitch open rate. 3. Treat your PR agency as a strategic partner rather than just a service provider. Listen, anyone can hit up Chat GPT, generate a subpar press release in five minutes, and send it out on the wire where most of the feedback you'll get is from other wire services trying to get you to use theirs next time. A partner is there to help create impactful narratives that drive brand growth and loyalty. Your goals are their goals. Be open to their feedback and suggestions as to how to achieve them! #Communications #series #Chapter04 How do you know if you have the aptitude to start a career in advertising & communications? Honestly, I didn’t know till the day I finished my first month at MICA | The School of Ideas. I was lucky, and I am sure you would be too, as I try to share my ideas to understand our interest in communication. Of course, this won’t be an exhaustive list. They are just a few points from my experience of being passionate in advertising & communications. 1) Are you opinionated? Yes having opinions and the ability / confidence to develop them and express them is surely one ✔️ mark in favour of advertising as a career option. The keyword here is ‘develop’ - the earnestness to read, discuss and listen to strengthen our opinions. Blind opinions can only lead you to angry brawls, not advertising. 2) Are you logical? Yes, although sense of advertising & communications are often thought as ‘common sense’, yet I want to stress that common people hardly have any interest in the science and art behind communications. Communications is not only about solving marketing problems but also about executing the solution in multiple media right from BTL to the Internet. Unless you have a sound logical mind to derive a solution and execute the same, you won’t find communications easy and interesting. Logic is a particular way of thinking that is reasonable and based on good judgment. It is a formal scientific method of examining, finding inference or thinking about ideas with sound arguments. 3) Are you creative? Creativity in advertising is about having an imagination that is rooted to solve a communication problem. We don’t sell the creative per se but the object in that creative piece. Creative people tend to have a lot of energy, curiosity, risk taking abilities, persistence, intuition, and are self aware to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses. Most of all, creative people have vivid imaginations and are able to think outside the box. They are not constrained by conventional thinking and are able to come up with novel and innovative ideas. 4) Are you curious? This is perhaps the key element to decide if you should opt for communications. It is not necessary that one needs to be curious in all subjects. But one needs to have the energy and patience to be curious about many things in life, study them, and have an opinion about them. Conclusion: If you think you have the above four attributes, and still want to figure out more about your interest in communications, you may leave a comment. I shall try to address your confusion. We are constantly thinking about new and exciting content that will resonate with our audience in a unique way. However, it is natural to experience dry spells from time to time. Today, we have access to more media and information than ever before. This information is readily available and at our fingertips. While this can lead to information overload, it also offers exposure to endless creative ideas. For a professional who wants to be in the know, this can be an invaluable resource. Making a daily effort to inform yourself through media platforms of your choice will ensure that you are up to date with industry trends and exposed to new ideas and inspiration for your own content. Gone are the days where creative ruts occur. A simple browsing session on your favorite platform is sure to inspire something! Make time to creatively brainstorm each day or week. It will keep you feeling energized and excited about your work, as you see all the possibilities that are truly out there. You can do things the way they have always been done, but it's much more exciting to experiment with doing things differently and tapping into new innovative approaches. Who knows, a little time to refresh yourself on industry news could become your next big success story!

If it wasn’t for my serving experience, I wouldn’t have met an integral person in my life. (Or the co-founder of Third Eye Insights). Back in university, I juggled three jobs to put myself through school. One of those jobs was waiting tables. Whenever customers asked about my career aspirations, I would say I wanted to become a lawyer. (law was my dream at the time)  they often minimized it in a “that’s cute” kind of way. But one shift, I crossed paths with a woman who offered me a job as her executive assistant. Suddenly, I found myself in boardrooms surrounded by a completely different network. This was where I met Phillip. I told him I wanted to be a lawyer and asked if I could intern at his law firm over the summer. He said yes, and I ended up staying after the summer as his receptionist.  (Which to be honest, wasn’t a job that I loved). So, I took a computer science course and taught myself photoshop. Before I knew it, I was creating social media graphics and designing a new logo for Phillip's firm. He asked me why my career aspiration wasn’t focused on getting into branding and marketing. He saw something in me that I hadn't fully recognized myself. So, I made the move and landed a job as the Marketing Director for a Medical Marijuana company. Eventually, Phillip and I decided to combine our passion for strategic brand storytelling. Here are some words of advice for creative people who are navigating their careers with what can sometimes feel like a faulty compass. 👇 ⛔ Never get comfortable. The comfort zone is the mortuary of creative careers. Test yourself, always. Push yourself into territories that scare you. Be willing to fail. “I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.” - David Bowie 💡 Keep doing. Being constantly creative is the key to creative longevity. Keep making new stuff. Have side projects. And, as the title of Austin Kleon’s great book says - ‘Show Your Work’. Put it out there. Let people know who you are and what you’re doing. There are 8 billion people on this spinning space rock and not many of them know you exist, change that. 👀 Remain forever curious. There’s a lot in this world to be amazed about. Go to more art galleries. Read more books. See more films. Listen to more music. Dig into how other creative people do what they do. “Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.” - Leo Burnett 🧠 Make these four E’s part of your life. Explore (new directions and possibilities, always.). Embrace (new ideas, techniques, and technology, never fear the ‘new’.). Excite (yourself, by doing new things and seeing what is possible if you try). Educate (yourself, be an eternal student of your craft and creativity in general). 💪 Have a posse. Don’t be an island. Surround yourself with people on a similar path, people who will encourage and support your creative career mission and in return, you’ll do the same for them.
