Pura Besakih, the largest temple in Indonesia, is located in #BesakihVillage, and it is facing a problem with waste. The Sukla consortium team, consisting of Wastehub Alam Lestari, Rebricks Indonesia, and Bali Waste Cycle under the #CatalystChangemakersEcosystem 2.0 program, is determined to address this issue in the sacred area. After several months of implementing Sukla's solutions, let's look at the progress made and the challenges encountered!
Initially, the Sukla team faced various challenges related to community empowerment. The interest of the Besakih Village community in Sukla's programs was low, resulting in difficulties such as obtaining permits, human resources for waste management, community habits, access to waste materials, and supporting raw materials for producing green products. To address these issues, Sukla organized various hearing sessions and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to introduce their programs to the Besakih community more closely. Over time, the participation of the Besakih Village community became more active, and the Sukla team successfully implemented several innovative solutions. They launched a dashboard to monitor community waste retribution costs, allowing residents to track their waste management progress.
By March 2024, hundreds of green products, equivalent to approximately 37 kg of residual waste, were successfully managed, providing economic benefits to the community. The collaboration with the Karangasem Regency Environmental Office (DLHK) has been crucial in optimizing the empowerment of the waste sorting team and securing recycled waste materials. Through the use of social media and e-commerce platforms, businesses in the area have been able to market their green products to a wider audience. All stakeholders, from the government to the local community, are united in their efforts to protect the village that is home to Indonesia's largest temple.
