Let’s talk about certification! 🤓 A Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) is a board certified ICU nurse. I recently renewed my CCRN for the first time since obtaining it. This needs to be done every 3 years. I was happy to see that the AACN has a category dedicated to Legal Nurse Consultants, validating that our complex clinical knowledge can be utilized to collaborate in another setting besides direct patient care to have positive impact. After almost a decade as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse, it was important for me to obtain even though my employer didn’t offer anything for it. It was an investment in myself. What does it take to be CCRN certified? ✅at least 1,750 hours providing direct care to critically ill patients ✅at least 2-5 years of doing the job of providing direct care to ICU patients ✅exam is required, which covers EVERY specialty of ICU As someone with mainly neuro/trauma/pulmonary experience, the cardiac section encompassed most of the exam and was a bit intimidating. 1 of 3 nurses that take the CCRN don’t pass. Less than 2% of all nurses hold their CCRN, and less than 10% of ICU nurses. SO I felt it was important to maintain to keep my knowledge current, keep those hard-earned letters after my name and maintain credibility. Let’s discuss! It's Time for a Change! 🔄💰 Did you know that nursing is one of the only clinical services that cannot bill for their services? This practice obscures the true value of the nurse and fails to recognize the critical, independent contributions of nurses to patient care and outcomes. 🚫📉 In primary care, the 99211 E&M code is billed as an “incident to” service and often referred to as the nurse visit code. It can be used when medical assistants or nurses perform services like wound checks, dressing changes, suture removal, or education. Medicare reimburses $22.92 for this code. This one code does not capture the breadth of knowledge and services that nurses can provide, nor does it reflect the significant time and effort nurses dedicate to patient care. The Commission for Nurse Reimbursement is working to establish a direct billing structure for the vital services nurses deliver. The life of an ED nurse is marked by unique experiences, demanding responsibilities, and the ability to adapt quickly. In this essay, we will explore the challenges that ED nurses face daily and the strength and dedication required to thrive in this profession. ➡️The Fast-Paced Environment ED nurses work in a fast-paced and chaotic environment, providing immediate and critical care to patients with urgent medical needs. They must prioritize and respond swiftly to each patient's condition. This demands organizational skills, remaining calm under pressure, and effective communication. ➡️Emotional Resilience ED nurses witness human suffering and tragedy daily. They face traumatic events and must maintain emotional stability while providing compassionate care. Coping with the emotional toll requires a support system and self-care practices. ➡️Multitasking and Decision-Making ED nurses must juggle multiple patients with varying conditions, assessing, triaging, and prioritizing their care. They need strong critical thinking abilities to make split-second decisions that can save lives. ➡️Physical Demands and Long Hours The job is physically demanding, with nurses constantly on their feet, rushing between patients, assisting with procedures, and working long hours. While automation can undoubtedly streamline administrative tasks and documentation, it should never replace the deeply human connections and patient interactions that define nursing. As nurse leaders rightly emphasize, automation should be an enhancement, not a replacement for care.
