I am sure that CLIA labs are not the only industry that experiences shortages, but we are facing some significant labor shortages. Yesterday I posted about the shortage of pathologist; now it is time to address the histotech shortage. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) estimates that by 2030, there will be a shortage of 13,000 histotechnologists. 📊 The statistics provided by the National Society for Histotechnology (NSH) further highlight the severity of the situation: A 2022 NSH study reveals that the average age of a histotechnologist is 53 years old, indicating an urgent need for new talent to join the field. 📉 This growing shortage is attributed to several factors, including the retirement of baby boomer histotechnologists, increasing demand for histology services, and the limited number of histology training programs. ❗ The impact of this scarcity is felt by patients as well. For instance, a recent study found that the average wait time for a pathology report has increased from 10 to 14 days since 2010. Swift and accurate pathology reports are crucial for timely diagnoses and treatment decisions. 🏭 Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach, and here are some steps that can be taken: 🔹 Increase Histology Training Programs: Advocate for expanding training programs to attract more individuals to pursue histotechnology as a rewarding career option. 🔹 Be more flexible when recruiting histotechs: Enhance compensation, tuition reimbursement, sign-on bonuses,, and additional training. 🔹 Use more aggressive recruiting techniques. Job postings are not an effective way to attract candidates in demand. Use an external recruiting firm to improve your chances. (Pick one firm instead of multiple firms—never a good idea to use multiple firms.) 🔹 Embrace Automation: Implement advanced technologies to streamline processes and reduce the workload of histotechnologists, enabling them to focus on more intricate tasks. #Histotechnologists #Healthcare #PatientCare #MedicalIndustry #HealthcareRecruitment #ASCP #NSH
