🎉 I'VE BEEN FREELANCING FOR 3️⃣ YEARS TODAY!! 🎉 Sorry not sorry for my all-caps energy (I am not ashamed) – It dawned on me yesterday that we were rolling into February, reminding me about my 3rd official year as my all-time favorite career role as: ✨ Designer / Motion Designer / Illustrator / LLC-Owner / COG (Chief Office-Goblin, self-proclaimed) / Employee of EVERY Month (by default unfortunately) / Maker of fun (hopefully helpful) design videos / & Preliminary Golden Girl ✨ ...but I can't really fit that on my LinkedIn profile... I don't really have any big "things that I've learned" to say that hasn't been said by the amazing motion & design communities I get to be a part of. It feels like a dream to still be taking charge of my own career and the people I get to interact with on a day-to-day basis, and the joy of consistently being challenged & passionate is unmatched. I couldn't have made it this far with my sanity in tact and confidence as high without Justin Havey, always pushing me to go higher, and reminding me of my lengthy title above ^. And I would say I couldn't have been as efficient without our fur-ssistant, Rocky, but he's never *once* gotten our coffees right, and he's just so damn lazy. That's what we get for hiring our fur-son I guess. In the coming week or two, I plan to make a fun video talking, NAY – *reflecting* on the last three years, and talking about my top 5 favorite projects of freelancing EVER! Before I launched DZ!NR, I was working as a freelance graphic designer for many years. And now when I look back, I see so many mistakes I had made back then. Over the years, I've transitioned from a self-taught designer to an owner, and I've learned so many things by helping young designers grow. If I had to start freelancing from scratch, here are 7 things I would focus on: 1/ One of my early mistakes was trying to offer a wide range of services. Instead, I would focus on clarity – what specific services can I excel in? Specialisation helps you improve faster and attracts clients who value specialists. 2/ Back then, I was willing to work with anyone. While experimentation is vital, a clear understanding of your ideal client can make things smoother. It's about identifying who you work best with and tailoring your services to their needs. 3/ Creating a portfolio is crucial, but don't spread yourself. I would focus on two or three projects that showcase my ability to solve problems. This portfolio will become your magnet, attracting clients who resonate. 4/ Before showcasing my portfolio to the world, I'd conduct an honest self-assessment. Would I hire myself? Does my work communicate who I can help? This ensures that your portfolio aligns with your client's expectations. 5/ Instead of searching for clients far, start with your closest connections and your personal social media platforms. Share your journey, ask for referrals and watch as your network supports your growth. 6/ To effectively market your services, put yourself in your ideal client's shoes. Where do they spend their time online? Knowing their behaviour can guide your marketing efforts and make them more effective. 7/ Beyond being a talented designer, provide value through knowledge-sharing. Host workshops and collaborate with complementary service providers. Demonstrating your expertise sets you apart in a crowded market. While these insights help for a smoother start, the mental shifts and experiences you gain along the way are equally valuable. What freelancing problems are you facing currently? #graphicdesigner

From Corporate Visual Designer to Freelancer ✨ I’ve been wanting to open up and share a piece of my heart with you all—a journey that's been a rollercoaster of emotions, growth, and newfound freedom. For five years, I worked hard as a Graphic and then UIUX Designer in corporate space. It was fulfilling in many ways, but there was always a whisper in the back of my mind, nudging me to step out of my comfort zone and explore the unknown. Recently I went on solo trip to the mountains, That trip opened my eyes to the beauty of freedom and self-discovery, leading me to make a bold decision—I chose to leave my corporate job and move into world of freelancing. It isn't just about choosing when I work or what projects I take—it's about being true to myself and doing what I love. It's about facing my fears and feeling alive in the uncertainty. And let's not forget—it's okay to work in a corporate setting. There's nothing wrong with working in a big company. It's just not for me. Freelancing lets me be myself and be creative in my own way. Through freelancing, I've found a sense of purpose that goes beyond just earning a money. Each project feels like a piece of my heart, and I'm grateful for every step of this journey. So here's to taking chances, following our dreams, and sharing our stories with the world and to finding beauty in the messy, imperfect journey of life. 3 tips that have helped me as a freelance motion designer: 1. Make what you want to get paid to make. Most of the time it’s difficult for a client to use their imagination about your capabilities if you haven’t already made something similar to what they want. This isn’t always the case, but for obvious reasons a potential new client will often gravitate towards choosing a freelancer who already has proven experience creating what they want. Your portfolio should include strong examples of the type of work you want to be making for clients. Doing this as an exercise will not only strengthen your opportunities with new clients, but will also give you more confidence with the work you do in the future. Take advantage of all the online resources there are to learn new skills, whether it’s Youtube tutorials or enrolling in a School of Motion course for example. 2. Pay attention to new tools that other motion designers are using. Even seasoned motion designers who have been in the industry for many years have to pick up new skills and learn new programs for client projects at times. Being adaptable to the needs of a project or team is huge as a freelancer, and shows that you’re capable of handling a curve ball and tackling unfamiliar challenges. Additionally, staying up to date with emerging tools and technologies demonstrates to clients that you’re evolving alongside the industry. One tool that I’ve been spending a lot of time with lately is Fable, which is an entirely web-based motion design app. With many designers shifting towards cloud-based design tools with improved ease of use, apps like this are becoming essential to have in your toolkit. 3. Continuously engage with the type of work you want to do — it seems obvious but it’s important to surround yourself with work that inspires you. Actively look for new design inspiration and make it a daily habit to make note of new skills that you want to learn to create the type of work that excites you. A lot of designers who are early on in their career are still trying to develop their personal style, and a great way to do that is to study work from designers that you look up to. I've completed more than 20 projects, but the first one was the hardest. When I started as a freelance designer on Fiverr, I had: 1. Little experience. 2. No portfolio 3. Limited exposure. 4. Immense self-doubt. And that was the best part. Why? Because it pushed me to my limits, tested my resilience, and made me realize that every professional started at square one. But one thing I had was unwavering love and passion for design. Here’s what I did: 1. Worked tirelessly on enhancing my skills. 2. Took up a $15 project and gave it my all. 3. Went an entire month without any projects. 4. Analyzed successful freelance designers to understand their strategies. 5. Offered free work to build a stronger portfolio. One thing I have understood is: 1. Success won't come overnight. 2. Patience and consistency are key. 3. Always keep learning and adapting. Four years into my journey, I've transitioned to a full-time freelance designer, working with incredible clients who I'm proud to call my long-term partners. When Flexibility Turns into Full-Time Demands A few months ago, I took on a freelance graphic design project with a food brand, and it turned out to be a total nightmare. Even though I was supposed to be freelancing, they expected me to be available full-time based on their needs and demands. → I couldn’t take a single day off without explaining why I needed it. → They would call me non-stop, even if I was unavailable for just 5 minutes. → Their tone was horrible—they would literally scream during conversations. I tried addressing these issues, but they weren’t willing to make any changes, so I had to walk away. However, I learned some valuable lessons from the experience: → Make sure to outline your availability and stick to it. → Have a clear conversation about what is expected from both sides. → Don’t put up with disrespectful behavior.
