On World Wildlife Day, let's celebrate the beauty and fragility of India's critically endangered species. Did you know? India is home to just around 2500 Bengal tigers 🐯 in the wild, the last remaining 500-650 Asiatic lions 🦁 and only an estimated 500 snow leopards🐆 survive in the wild. Additionally, the Indian rhinoceros 🦏, with a population of about 3,700 individuals, has experienced a remarkable comeback from near extinction(only 200) thanks to conservation efforts. While these numbers offer some hope, these magnificent creatures still face numerous threats, pushing them towards vulnerability. Poaching, habitat loss due to human encroachment and human-wildlife conflict remain major concerns. This World Wildlife Day, let's pledge to act! Raise awareness about the threats they face. Make responsible choices that minimise our environmental impact and benefit wildlife. Recently we celebrated #WorldTigerDay! Human activities have impacted the tiger habitats. Tigers are vital apex predators that maintain ecosystem balance. When we protect tigers, we protect entire forests and all species within them. Tigers face serious threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. In India, home to 70% of the world's wild tigers, conservation efforts are crucial. We must act now to ensure these magnificent creatures don't only exist in stories. How can we save tigers? * Support protected areas & wildlife corridors * Strengthen anti-poaching measures * Promote sustainable livelihoods for communities near tiger habitats * Raise awareness about tiger conservation India has shown that tiger conservation can work! From 1,411 tigers in 2006 to 3167 in 2022, our efforts are paying off. But work isn't done. We need continued commitment from government, NGOs, & citizens to ensure a future where humans & tigers coexist. This #WorldTigerDay let's pledge to protect our national animal. Every action counts – from supporting conservation organizations to spreading awareness. Together, we can secure a future for tigers & ecosystems they support.

The day was founded in 2010 when the 13 tiger range countries came together to create Tx2 – the global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022. While efforts have gained significant momentum by 2024 and the goal is to revive the numbers of tigers in the wild, however the loss of habitat, overpopulation and poaching are still challenges that conservationists, environmentalists and governments have to fight off. The protected habitat’s are a reminder of our responsibility towards this planet. 1 April- Project Tiger Global Records & Reference Organization ‘A tiger is a large-hearted gentleman with boundless courage and that when he is exterminated – as exterminated he will be unless public opinion rallies to his support – India will be the poorer by having lost the finest of her fauna’. - Jim Corbett Tiger is one of the key wildlife species in the faunal web. In 1973, government authorities realised that the tiger population had dwindled to 1,827, from an estimated 55,000 at 1900. The major threat to tiger population include poaching for trade, shrinking habitat, depletion of prey based species, growing human population and deforestation. Project Tiger is a tiger conservation programme launched on 1 April, 1973. The much-needed project was launched in Jim Corbett National Park, Uttrakhand. Project Tiger was administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The project aims at ensuring a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats, protecting them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage, forever represented as close as possible, the diversity of ecosystems across the country. Notably, the project started in 1973 with just 9 tiger reserves covering 18,278 sq km in 9 states but today, there are 51 tiger reserves spread over an area of 72,749 sq km in 18 tiger range states. It’s Feel Good Friday and we want to share some awesome wildlife news with you… 💛 One of the world's rarest cats, the Iberian lynx, is no longer classed as endangered, according to a report by the International Union For Conservation Of Nature. Here’s the facts: 🐱Habitat loss, poaching and road accidents caused population decline. 🐱The Lynx’s population grew from 62 to 648 mature individuals between 2001 and 2022, with a total population estimated at over 2,000. 🐱The wild cat is native to Spain and Portugal. 🐱Conservation efforts focused on increasing the wild rabbit population (which is their main food source) and reintroducing captive lynxes. 🐱Recovery is described as the greatest ever for a cat species!
