Safeguarding our local young Brawn and Brain has to be a strategic priority up and down the country. Is this still about ‘levelling up’ regional unequity or increasingly existential? Today’s The Guardian makes a compelling case. One emergent route to community sustainability and regeneration is to offer young people a bridge of education into employment in their home towns. Giving decentralised power, investment and energy to hyperlocal learning experiences, career opportunities and renewed emphasis on utilising community resources - all fed by an aspiring local workforce. As we have discovered in the genesis of New Working Class, any single enterprise or employer will not take the risk on their own. Why would they? But if we site an anchor experience like education on the high street, we can also negotiate access to stranded assets, space and turnkey incentives for businesses to congregate and test their viability around an open campus. To play their part in reigniting our centres, and so rebuild asset values, local wealth and wellbeing. We must find a new way to retain young people - committed to a rich mix of experiences by offering learning pathways that run alongside and through workplace opportunities emerging within their local communities. We have to. Or our communities will contine to atrophy. This has to be a policy priority. A coalition of the willing. #highstreets #youthengagement #regeneration

Essex SEND WEX Pilot #SpeakersforSchools, in collaboration with Greater Essex Careers Hub, are launching a SEND project to support SEND schools in the Essex area. Future Freedom is a programme supporting disadvantaged young people with SEND in eight Essex special schools to transition to their best next step. The 4-week programme aims to… - Inspire and raise aspirations among students with SEND needs - Offer authentic work-related employer encounters with one or more local business To help these young people we are reaching out to our business community to support our Future Freedom work experience opportunity. This blended experience of the workplace will provide young people with opportunities to meet employers, uncover new careers, and visit a workplace. Spread over four short sessions/workshops (virtual and F2F), the programme gives business volunteers, young people, and teachers a chance to build a relationship over time. We will support you in planning and delivering content. To register your interest and find out more about the programme and what we expect from volunteer employers, please email Ian.Cooper@speakersforschools.org #speakersforschools #send

This is such wonderful news - economic support for disadvantaged folks to complete social work degrees (placement). I have almost finished my social work degree, but being a solo parent with significant complex mental health challenges has meant 3 months without income is a barrier to completion. So despite getting full marks for several assignments, completing my first placement while pregnant (a pregnancy with multiple complexities), even writing an essay in hospital, having contractions (during lockdowns, so hugely isolated, the essay got a mark in the 90s), I’m an (unpaid) placement away from completion. In limbo. I completed my first social work placement while pregnant. The impact on me financially was devastating - not only was it three months of unpaid work, it also meant I didn’t qualify for ANY parental leave. NONE. So I solo parented an infant through COVID lockdowns while juggling my own complex mental health challenges, without basic economic security. So when social work tells me it is interested in social justice, I have some reservations. I have many others, including how it relates to lived experience (Eg some trans students in my course were put through transphobic hell). Social work has some deep conversations ahead if it is to have any hope of matching its own rhetoric and potential(?) #socialwork

The College accepts that there is a need for a stronger focus on addressing local economic needs, and to involve the local business community far more in the activities of the College. This has been reinforced by a clearer appreciation of the fact that the majority of learners live locally, and intend to remain in the area when seeking employment. The area hosts a wide range of small businesses, plus a major employer at the local shopping centers. . . . #LocalEconomicNeeds #CommunityEngagement #LocalBusinessCommunity #SupportingLocal #EmpoweringLearners #LocalEmployment #SmallBusinessSupport #CollegeandCommunity #BusinessPartnerships #CommunityDevelopment #LocalOpportunities #EconomicEmpowerment #BuildingTogether #LocalWorkforce #StrongerTogether #SustainableGrowth #LocalBusinesses #EducationandEmployment #BusinessInvolvement #CommunityFirst

In today's rapidly evolving world, a sense of belonging, academic dedication, and career exploration is crucial for our students personal and professional growth. By engaging in service projects, individuals can forge meaningful relationships, fostering a sense of belonging within their communities. 📚 Academic Commitment: Participating in community service enhances academic commitment by promoting a deeper understanding of real-world issues. Through hands-on experiences, individuals gain practical knowledge that complements their academic studies, reinforcing their commitment to learning. 💼 Career Exploration: Community service offers a platform for individuals to explore diverse career paths and interests. By volunteering in different roles and industries, individuals can discover their strengths, interests, and values, ultimately guiding them towards fulfilling career paths. 🤝 Connection to Community Service: The link between community service and these essential qualities is undeniable. Engaging in service not only benefits the community but also enriches individuals personally and professionally, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment. #Belonging #AcademicCommitment #CareerExploration #CommunityService #MakeADifference I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences on the intersection of community service with belonging, academic commitment, and career exploration. "While there is only mixed evidence of long-term effects on education or employment outcomes, the reduction in crime indicates that the benefits of summer jobs programs exceed the costs, especially for disadvantaged youth."
