Children are much more likely to develop a love of books if someone reads to them. In honor of World Read Aloud Day, our own Todd Chance reads "Carina Felina" by Carmen Agra Deedy - and he does a great job! Childhood literacy is a priority for all of us here and our parent company, The E.W. Scripps Company. Please share with a child in your life, and follow the link to learn more about our "If You Give a Child a Book" campaign. #giveabook https://lnkd.in/gymbGP-Q

Would you believe that some states are blocking access to funds to feed hungry children? Every week in my clinic I take care of families that are struggling to put enough food on the table. A new federal program is looking to help with that. Check out our newest episode of KIDS TODAY where we talk all about the program, what states are rolling it out, and about how you (or someone you know) can get enrolled! https://lnkd.in/gpXF-vDU

It is a remarkable privilege to be able to read, whether it is a natural talent or acquired through hard work. Reading opens up pathways to unexplored worlds, provides entertainment, sparks the imagination, and has numerous positive neurological and psychological benefits for children. Studies indicate that children who are read to from an early age develop greater literacy skills, experience heightened language and communication development, feel more connected to their caregivers, and are better prepared for kindergarten and future academic pursuits. Ardent Solutions is in need of companies and/or individuals looking to make a difference in our community and help support our early childhood development and literacy program. Ardent Solutions is a non-profit organization in Allegany County NY that manages the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for local residents. We are currently providing nearly 50% of the counties 0-5 age youth with age appropriate books every month at no cost to the families. Today, we need your support to continue the program. Any companies interested in partnering please message me and I can get you more details and the incredible marketing package we can provide in exchange for your support. This is a 501c3 organization and donations may be tax deductible. If you can't financially help please share! If you are celebrating #GeorgiaReads and not including your local library in the push to increase literacy rates, you’re missing out on the best resource your community has to combat literacy issues. Library staff hold degrees (usually a masters) in library science, and that includes literacy diagnostics and knowledge of how to address literacy gaps. They already see the most vulnerable populations of your community, and they are one of the only (often THE only) third space in a community that doesn’t require financial expenditures. Libraries help address broadband connectivity concerns, computer knowledge, community engagement, and literacy rates all under one roof that already exists. There isn’t a need to have a huge push and reinvent the wheel: the tools for increasing literacy are at our fingertips. We need to fund library programming, additional staff (at a livable wage), and supplies/ books to support the work that they are already doing. Our school library staff are on the same coin, so don’t forget to target their needs as well. #Georgialiteracy #libraries #communitybuilding #communityengagement #fundlibraries

🔔 New research from shows that children’s enjoyment of reading is its lowest level in almost two decades. Over half (56%) of 8-18 year olds in England say they don't enjoy reading in their free time. This matters because reading enjoyment is even more important for children's educational success than their family's socio-economic status. (OECD, 2002) Here’s what we’re doing about it: 👊 Campaigning for greater government investment in primary school libraries. 1 in 7 schools in England don't have a library. Did you know it's not a legal requirement to have a library in a school? 💫 Transformed 500 primary school libraries since 2015 together with our partners National Literacy Trust, training 1,000 teachers, reaching 200,000 children and donating 190,000 Puffin books. What memories do you have of your school library? ✉ A short, easy-to-read letter to busy parents. 👀 A streamlined series of emails with an obvious call to action. 💬 Clear, crisp survey language to gather important community feedback. Those are just three examples of the work the Forthright Advising team has done this summer. AND... these are all examples that help lead to a better world for children and their families. 🏆 When advocates have easy-to-understand materials, children and families win. 🏆 When organizations lead with simple campaign messages, children and families win. 🏆 When a new video enables a policymaker to quickly understand a complicated concept, children and families win. Wanna know what I’m most proud of lately? Our amazing team has helped so many nonprofit leaders become better communicators. 💕 And ultimately, when our clients create user-friendly outreach materials, that means the children and families they serve benefit. 🚀
