Just holding a hat that would never fit her 🤷♀️ You might never notice how badly headwear fits women and people with textured hair, locs, braids, or other protective hairstyles it until someone points it out... and then you can't unsee it. Headwear #discrimination. The WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) Draft focuses more on presenting the jersey than putting on the hat when players are drafted, but the tradition of giving a hat still holds. And Caitlin Clark is doing everything but putting on her Indiana Fever gear. But do they put them on? Nope. Just holding them. Pointing at them. Mimicking wearing them by holding them up to their head. But not wearing them. Why? Too big. Wrong fit for women. The hat material will damage their hair. The hats don't support their hairstyles. DRAFT DAY: Headwear Discrimination or Unconscious Bias? What happens at EVERY draft for EVERY sport? You're given a hat from your new team. The expectation is to put it on, right? Did the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) think that these ladies would just show up looking dowdy, ready to jam a hat on their head? Hell no. They spent a small fortune on their outfits, makeup, and.... HAIR. Now, I'm all about tradition. Hats are the the center of entertainment, sports, music, and culture. They are a physical and highly visible symbol, a flag even, for your representation. But... we are so far past due for an upgrade that represents WHO is wearing them and for the situations where they are being used, what they are representing. These hats should have been satin lined at the VERY LEAST, so the ladies would have felt more comfortable sliding them on and off for photos without having to think twice about messing up their hair. The craziest part of this? Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso *consciously* know the hats will mess up their hair but most likely, just like most everyone else, have never stopped to think there could be another solution, another way.... ...that there could be hats made for women or hats made for hair. Me and Lauren Parchment have had many discussions about our frustrations relating to the hair industry in the UK. This video highlights a portion of the issue. There are so many creative styles in black hair styling that don’t get the recognition, nor do the creators get the same level as respect as styling for our counterparts. Quick stats: - The UK black hair industry is worth an estimated £88 million as of 2022 - black women spend on average 3x more than our counterparts on hair care -black women make up 80% of the total UK hair product sales in the UK -Winnie Awa stated in Hairdressers Journal International “The Black Hair Industry in 2023” that 305 out of 35,000 salons in the UK cater to black hair Jacqui Mcintosh quoted to Hairdressers Journal “I think ultimately, the younger generation are not prepared to be marginalised and are demanding to be seen and respected as consumers” With styles like the braided baldie that challenge European beauty standards, this quote from Jacqui demonstrates how the modern generation of stylists are redefining the landscape of the hair industry in the UK There needs to be infrastructure in place to support the growth of this sector and the creatives within it.
