This first requires access to opportunities, roles and industries that still exclude women. This requires understanding why the numbers for Black and racialized women in leadership roles continues to decline. This requires retention strategies to keep women in these roles and opportunities when they get through the door. Our workplaces are better when we value and respect diversity of thought. In the #STEM field specifically, women still fall behind in representation. There are actions those of us in the industry can take to make it more welcoming for women and other underrepresented communities as shared here by Harvard Business Review. March is Women’s History Month, a time for us all to reflect on the contributions of women in our workplaces and the ongoing fight for gender equity. This month and throughout the year, it’s important that we work to create opportunities for women. McKinsey’s latest report on women in the workplace gives excellent insights into some hard-won gains and areas we desperately need to see progress. On the path to senior leadership, one critical issue is the “broken rung,” where businesses fail to promote a proportional number of women from entry level to that first step up to manager. This gap is significantly wider for Black women and Latinas. It’s so important that we turn this knowledge into action to uplift the women in our organizations and make our workplaces more equitable, which data shows ultimately improves financial performance. https://lnkd.in/dCTV8FY8

An uncomfortable truth. I’ve not directly experienced this, but I have seen and heard real stories where it has had massive impact. Supporting women into leadership should be on everyone’s agenda, equality and equity in the workplace. It’s easy to share a report, but we also need to make sure we take action. On International Women’s Day, I want to make use of my digital voice to give visibility to the latest Women in the Workplace report conducted by McKinsey in partnership with LeanIn.Org. This effort is the largest study of women in corporate America and Canada. According to it, women are more ambitious than ever, and workplace flexibility is fuelling them. Yet, despite some hard-fought gains, women’s representation is not keeping pace. Since 2015, the number of women in the C-suite has increased from 17 to 28 percent, and the representation of women at the vice president and senior vice president levels has also improved significantly. These hard-earned gains are encouraging yet fragile. Over the past nine years, women—and especially women of colour—have remained underrepresented across the corporate pipeline. Women represent roughly one in four C-suite leaders, and women of colour just one in 16. The “glass ceiling”—a term introduced more than 40 years ago—refers to an invisible, systemic barrier that prevents women from rising to senior leadership. But contrary to popular belief, the glass ceiling is not the biggest obstacle to women’s progression. It is actually at the first step up to manager— or the “broken rung.” If we fix the broken rung, we will add one million more women to management in corporate America over the next five years. Gender diversity is not just a fairness issue; it's a bottom-line issue. Companies with more women in leadership are 21% more likely to experience above-average profitability. It’s simply smart business. I know that companies are continuously seeking ways to enhance efficiency and drive performance. One of the most effective yet often overlooked strategies is increasing the representation of women in the workplace. 👉🏻Women bring unique perspectives, skills, and approaches that can significantly enhance organizational efficiency, productivity, and revenue.
