An excellent development. The best way to increase badly needed investment and efficiency in Europe’s telecommunications sector is to (1) deregulate and (2) specialise. As the experience in America shows (95% 5G coverage, far ahead of Europe), (1) operators should focus on their customer experience (transmit more data through technology improvements), (2) tower companies should focus on steel (which offers co-location (site share) “upside” and therefore supports share prices and (3) land aggregators, funded by pension fund money looking for long-term, secure, bond-like cash flows should focus on land (in the U.S. well over a dozen aggregators are accepted participants in the ecosystem). If all market participants work together then everyone wins — ubiquitous coverage and increased capacity can be achieved through shared capital outlay and increased efficiency. Hopefully well-meaning but inexperienced governments bureaucrats, which have dramatically slowed down 5G rollouts in Europe (and Britain in particular) get out of the way. Europeans deserve better!
