When wildfires swept across Maui in August, they grew stronger and moved faster thanks, in part, to the presence of non-native grasses. In a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, local fire officials said they were growing increasingly concerned “about the blanket of invasive grasslands” taking over portions of the island. The presence of non-native grasses, such as fountain grass, brought to the Hawaiian Islands as ornamental features, has increased the threat of wildfires on Maui and other islands, such as Oahu. Dr. Jinelle Sperry, a research biologist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, is among those researchers seeking to better understand how to mitigate the spread of these non-native grasses and promote the growth of native species in the region.
