Several years ago, I made a career decision to transition from dentistry to sales. Back then, my monthly income of N44,000 barely covered my commute to work, leaving me wondering if I had made the right choice. Then one morning, I remembered the name of a lady who interviewed me a year ago. I heard the company was hiring again, and I thought to myself, this is my only chance to break through to the next level. I rehearsed my speech, dialed her number, and here’s what transpired: "Hello, good morning, ma. I am Dr. Odabor, a sales executive at XYZ company. I interviewed last year at your company for the medical rep position but didn't get the opportunity to work with you. I heard you are hiring again, and I am still very much interested in working at your company." There was a long silence, and then she responded, "We are already done with the written interview; however, if you can bring your resume to my office by 11 a.m. today, maybe you can make the oral interview." With my heart racing, I kept my cool and responded, "Yes, I am in Lagos, ma, and I will be there by 11 a.m. Thank you for the opportunity." Fast forward, I was selected to join the team of experts that spearheaded the launch of Sensodyne across Nigeria, marking the beginning of my career in multinational companies. The Missing Middle: Why Are There So Few Mid-Level Jobs in Nigeria? Lately, I've noticed a trend in the Nigerian job market: lots of entry-level and senior-level positions, but hardly any mid-level jobs. This gap is a real problem for many professionals. For most of us, our careers start with entry-level roles where we build up our skills and experience. The next step should be mid-level jobs that offer more responsibility and the chance to specialize before moving up to senior roles. But in Nigeria, it feels like there's a big jump from entry-level straight to senior positions, with not much in between. Most job ADs are either seeking 0-2 years experience or 5-10 years experience. What do you think about the lack of mid-level jobs? Have you faced this issue in your career? Tuesday Reminder: "You can't be an Accountant and apply to a Key Account Manager role. KAM is a sales role!" I understand you really need a job and I can totally relate to that. But try to apply with a clear head and look before you apply. These can help: 📌Apply at the point when you can easily comprehend and think E.g. The early hours of the morning. 📌Check the job requirements to be sure it is what you think it is. The Job designation (name) might be misleading 📌 Have a short bio/cover letter that you can easily adjust and use for the various jobs you apply to. 📌 Make sure you're not just looking at the job name but the location too. You can't be in Nigeria and apply to a local job in China (note I didn't say remote) 📌 Have faith and try other means like references, branding, attending conferences etc., to provide yourself opportunities to land a job.
