A Twisted Solar Eruptive Prominence Video Credit: SOHO Consortium, EIT, ESA, NASA Explanation: Ten Earths could easily fit in the "claw" of this seemingly solar monster. The monster, actually a huge eruptive prominence, is seen moving out from our Sun in this condensed half-hour time-lapse sequence. This large prominence, though, is significant not only for its size, but its shape. The twisted figure eight shape indicates that a complex magnetic field threads through the emerging solar particles. Differential rotation of gas just inside the surface of the Sun might help account for the surface explosion. The five-frame sequence was taken in early 2000 by the Sun-orbiting SOHO satellite. The world is set to witness the first solar eclipse of the year 2024, which is deemed as the "Great North American Solar Eclipse", in the holy month of Ramazan. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), the hybrid solar eclipse will be witnessed in Mexico, America, and Canada on April 8. "The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT," Nasa said in its advisory. Nasa said that Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse. "The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT." Eclipses occur when the moon sun and earth align in a rare cosmic setting casting their shadow or blocking the sunlight. However, the phenomenon of hybrid solar eclipses is extremely unusual. A total eclipse is when the Moon and the Sun line up in the sky in such a way that the Moon blocks the entire face of the Sun – called totality. Somewhere on the Earth, these occur approximately every 18 months. NASA scientists have observed a stunning cosmic fossil that was created when a supermassive black hole erupted over 5 million years ago. The gas appears to have ripped through the galaxy when it blasted from around the central black hole, which has a mass equivalent to around 1.6 million suns and currently feeds on matter surrounding it, powering the bright galactic engine called an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is estimated that NGC 4945 is forming stellar bodies at a rate of 18 sun-like stars each year, three times faster than the star formation rate of the Milky Way. Looking at NGC 4945 with the European Space Agency (ESA) telescope XMM-Newton, Weaver and team spotted a feature called the iron K-alpha line, which occurs when high energy X-ray light from the matter around the central supermassive black hole's disk hits cold gas elsewhere in the galaxy. The team theorizes that the cause of this extraordinary feature is jets of particles erupting from the supermassive black hole of NGC 4945, 5 million years ago. They think this jet was probably orientated so it blasted through the galaxy rather than escaping from the galactic plane.   This eruption caused a super-strong wind that still blows in NGC 4945 as we see it today, and it could also have triggered the galaxy's intense starburst period. The team will now continue to observe NGC 4945 and search for other clues showing how the central black hole is influencing the galaxy's evolution. They will also investigate if the X-rays from the central region could dissipate cold gas, eventually drawing a close to intense star formation and quenching NGC 4945's starburst phase. #galaxyaerosgh #space #spaceexploration #spacenews

A new image from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 🔭 collaboration has uncovered strong and organized magnetic fields spiraling from the edge of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Seen in polarized light for the first time, this new view of the monster lurking at the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy 🌌 has revealed a magnetic field structure strikingly similar to that of the black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, suggesting that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes.
