“Ask not what 2024 can do for you – ask what YOU can do for 2024”… paraphrazing John F. Kennedy, not the famous airport... the famous and ingenious former U.S. President! As we stand on the brink of a new year, it's apt to draw inspiration from the words of the famous and ingenious former U.S. President, John F. Kennedy. In his iconic phrase, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,” Kennedy implores us to transcend self-interest and actively contribute to the collective journey that lies ahead. The paraphrased quote serves as a poignant reminder, encouraging us to be proactive architects of the year unfolding before us. Kennedy's legacy extends beyond political realms, and his vision for a society that values civic duty remains as relevant as ever. By asking what we can do for 2024, we shift the focus from personal expectations to a commitment to shared progress. It's a call to action that resonates with the essence of Kennedy's leadership – a vision of individuals actively participating in shaping a better future for all. In practical terms, this call invites civic engagement, community involvement, and a mindset that goes beyond personal gain. Whether through volunteering, supporting local initiatives, or advocating for positive change, each action becomes a building block for a more collaborative and compassionate society. Moreover, Kennedy's vision fosters a sense of unity and collaboration. As we approach the year's end, I'd like to extend a shout out to my friend and former colleague, Daniel Stein-Sayles. As the Manager of Capital at Echoing Green, Daniel plays a crucial role in overseeing the selection of new Fellows. His commitment lies in ensuring that the processes and systems in place prioritize the identification of leaders dedicated to promoting racial equity globally. Having spent over 4 years on EG's Development team, I've had the privilege of witnessing Daniel's leadership on the Programs team. This year, as a former employee, I had the opportunity to volunteer as an application evaluator and got to see the evaluation process from a different lens. I'd like to highlight a few aspects of the process that I observed—insights that can offer valuable takeaways for all nonprofits: 1️⃣ Constant Innovation: Daniel and EG consistently introduce subtle adjustments to previous application cycle processes, drawing on insights from the last 7-8 selection cycles. 2️⃣ Efficiency: Daniel led a recorded instructional guide that walked volunteer evaluators through the review process, promoting a streamlined and efficient approach. 3️⃣ Responsiveness: Daniel's prompt responses to inquiries, regardless of their complexity, reflect a dedication to supporting the process—whether it's addressing scoring questions or assisting in setting up a review account. In recent years, we've seen a troubling decline in membership across civic organizations, notably Rotary Clubs. These groups have been community cornerstones, fostering belonging, mutual aid, and shared purpose. Their dwindling numbers not only signify a loss of tradition but also hint at a more fragmented society. Rotary and similar entities have historically transcended social, economic, and political divides, nurturing leaders, championing causes, and building resilient communities. This decline in civic engagement prompts us to question the state of our societal fabric. Are we facing increased isolation or disengagement? The weakening of communal ties suggests a decrease in social cohesion, essential for collective challenges and shared responsibility. My experience with Leadership Columbia and its Steering Committee underscored the Chambers of Commerce's vital role in nurturing community leaders. These programs prepare individuals for success and instill a commitment to civic engagement, demonstrating the interconnection between leadership and community service. However, the lack of representation from entities like the Greater Kansas City Chamber in Rotary and the absence of civic organization focus in programs like Centurion are concerning. If we're not engaged in civic organizations, how do we build community? Engaging in civic groups allows business leaders to apply their skills for the greater good, enriching both personal and professional lives and strengthening our social fabric. Overcoming barriers to engagement, such as time constraints and perceived irrelevance, is crucial. The decline in memberships calls us to action, especially those in leadership. It's time to renew our commitment to community service, stepping into impactful roles. Let's support civic organizations like Rotary, not just for their legacy but for the future they envision—a future where community and leadership intertwine to create a cohesive, vibrant society. 2023 was the year in which I received the most requests to speak FOR FREE or give workshops for free via entities that certainly have a budget to pay. I was 'invited' to speak or give a workshop for free for Black History Month, Women's History Month, and Earth Month a bunch of times last year from orgs that are certainly not struggling financially (this is separate from requests from orgs that struggle and are mostly minoritized groups who have been disenfranchised due to consequences of colonialism and oppression and therefore lack the resources to barely operate let alone pay speakers) . If one really understands the topics that I speak about, they wouldn't be asking me to do this for free. It's not #equitable #decolonial #inclusive or #sustainable to say the least-- all of which are the basis of my consulting, talks, and workshops. I am a bada*ss. I know I am. But, in case you need the 'conventional' metrics to show my bada*sry entering 2024 Year of the Dragon, here is a small slice of why HIRING and PAYING ME for #DEI services will achieve your organization's goals: 1. Me and my co-founder collaborated with Mercy For Animals leadership to train and consult them on #DEIJ and #antiracism 5. I was the Visiting Black Scholar at Butler University in April 2022, gave a keynote talk about afrofuturism and food, and read from my new novel in progress. 7. There are many obvious reasons that these organizations struggle to embed DEI and RE in substantive ways. If those in leadership roles don’t understand the significance of legitimate programs the whole attempt is a shallow and symbolic charade.

Once a quiet student uncertain of her path, she is now leading community projects that are changing lives—starting with her own. Leadership gave her the freedom to believe in her power, and now, she is helping others discover theirs through her non-profit company, Second Chance Empowerment as she pursues her pharmaceutical degree. We place high expectations on businesses to have social governance and license - to behave ethically. But what about individuals? We also have personal agency to make individual commitments to support diversity, inclusion, equity and access. So regardless of the business, you can make a small difference, to light a metaphorical candle and make a safe-space for all. Today I signed that SSSDLN: Space, Spatial & Surveying Diversity Leadership Network Accord. Signatories to the Accord pledge to be an #advocate, to be #reflective, to be #active, to #not accept excuses, and to be #visible in their support for diversity and inclusion in the sector, and more generally. During the GYC Conference workshop on Civic Engagement rooted in Grounded Leadership, Andile Mnguni, a prominent panelist, shared a thought-provoking insight: "I don't want to see myself working in the same community in the next 10 years. If I do, it means I have failed in my contribution and impact." This statement deeply resonated with me as someone passionate about community building and global affairs, representing diverse groups. Following the session, I had the honor of engaging with Andile Alexius Mnguni, a distinguished Social Entrepreneur and Speaker renowned for catalyzing change within Education, Food Systems, and Climate Change. As the founder of ROAR South Africa, she empowers young people and addresses social and environmental challenges through initiatives like The Source. Notably, Andile is a 2020 Global Teen Leader, a Thought For Food Ambassador, and a YALI Climate Tech Innovators and Leaders Fellow. She also hosts FEED Fridays, facilitating discussions on food system stakeholders, and is sought after as a speaker, moderator, and panelist. One of the key takeaways from our discussion was the importance of establishing a governance framework and legal structure for organizations to preempt conflicts and address stakeholder entitlements. We also discussed the significance of relationship-building, issue identification, strategy development, action-taking, and capacity building. Additionally, we explored the power of storytelling as a means to convey shared experiences, foster trust, and authenticity. Our interaction was incredibly insightful, offering me a deeper understanding of Andile's expertise and contributions to Civic Engagement across different continents. The attached pictures encapsulate the essence of my mandate. It was an honor to meet with other Young Leaders from various parts of our continents. I extend my gratitude to HISA for providing the opportunity to engage with my peers, learn about their backgrounds, experiences, expectations, and shared aspirations for meaningful youth participation and contributions in our communities, as well as on global stages.
