In school, finishing second in a relay race was something I never forgot. I was the final leg runner and I caught the baton in 5th position. The gap between first and me was huge. Somehow I channelled my energy to try to catch up with him. I never ran faster in my life, I felt. I nearly caught up and in the end, at the finishing line, I missed by a little. Our team finished second. Overjoyed at this, our teammates jumped for joy. It seemed like we were the ones who won. Best feeling in finishing second. Another example, I was in a bowling competition. I started hot. I bowled a high of 279 in the first game, stringing strike after strike. Second to fourth games were good as well, I was having a purple patch. Then suddenly the lanes started to dry up. The ball started to overhook. I missed, I hit splits, it seemed like a different person bowling. I ended up with a 170-something. And I finished with a final game of 148. Second place. Couldn't remember a time I was more disappointed in bowling. Second place in two different scenarios. Two different feelings and reactions. Looking back, it is quite an interesting experience. #science #research #career #development

Which is more tough - be first and continue to be first year after year, or, be second and try harder to be first the next time?
