Victoria Mustard, Decarbonisation Strategy Lead at Xoserve comments on the National Infrastructure Commission's latest report today: "The National Infrastructure Commission’s (NIC) conclusion that hydrogen will be critical for decarbonising heavy industry, and the recommendation to create a national hydrogen network, is a welcome one. It’s good to see national debate about ‘whole system’ infrastructure. “We read the report and its bold recommendations with interest, particularly when it comes to the use of the future of the gas network. While enabling more renewables to come onto the grid is fundamental to net zero, the gas industry currently remains a crucial component in achieving the UK’s sustainability goals. A focus on electrification does not change this, indeed the gas industry has been supporting the increase in electrification as part of a whole energy system for many years. “Meeting the demand for energy while achieving net zero is a complex journey that cannot be achieved with a single fuel. A low-carbon gas network could provide supportive energy services, such as seasonal storage, domestic heating or high-temperature heat for industry while we agree which energy sources present the best options for the UK.”
