Air cargo players look set to introduce a peak season surcharge at the end of August, as capacity comes under pressure. With increased demand out of China & Southeast Asia already driven by e-commerce/Fashion, capital equipment, & semicon verticals, the additional pressure from other outliers (blank sailing, port congestion, Red Sea impact) will drive other sectors to pivot towards airfreight. Adding to that, we will see fleet equipment between 747/777 removed from utilization in certain areas. With this - expect to see capacity continue to be transferred to support demand from APAC, which equates to higher rates in some form across all tradelanes, with Peak Season potentially coming into play earlier & possibly for longer than what was previously “normal”. With additional factors out of our control in 2nd half of 2024 that have potential to further impact the market (geopolitical tensions, extreme weather/draught, strike risks), expect the remainder of the year to be volatile with the market not settling until 2025 when new capacity enters the market.
