Please sign this and share if you can - it has just two days to go. 1 in 52 people aged 16-24 were experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness last year. We need a national strategy that will provide the direction and support needed to address: (1) the many forms that homelessness can take - from rough sleeping to sofa surfing to unsafe homes; (2) as well as the specific needs and challenges faced by young people - from the increased likelihood of family breakdown as a cause of homelessness to the decreased likelihood of receiving support from local authorities. We need a national strategy to end youth homelessness.

Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ❓ Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ❔ Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ❓ People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ❔ The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! 🙏

Launched our new Challenge 52 Campaign earlier in the year together with a new look website. www.ccp.org.uk Take a look and see if this is a charity that will, in part, support your Environment, Social & Governance Goals in particular investing in local community projects, such as Caring for Communities and People. Delighted also to announce that together with the business community we smashed our campaign target of £100,000, with whopping current total of £105,457.99 (including Gift Aid). When we set the target we knew how ambitious it was, and how difficult it would be to achieve. Buoyed by knowing the difference raising these funds would make, and through unique fundraising initiatives we reached our goal. The fund will deliver 2 temporary shelter *pods* to provide respite from sleeping in doorways, under bridges or beinghind superstores, allowing individuals to rehabilitate their lives while maintaining a sense of dignity and autonomy. What’s more, the funds will also cover the cost of a support worker to visit regularly, helping restore the faith in those who have been isolated from society, and with patience securing more permanent accommodation. And our *Crisis Fund* which offers grants to individuals and families with rent debt, which if not resolved often leads to eviction, then homelessness and periods of time in temporary accommodation. Research by Shelter found that children who have been in temporary accommodation for more than a year are over three times more likely to demonstrate anxiety and depression than those who have not. Shelter summarise the common problems experienced by children living in temporary accommodation: ■ Lack of privacy and space ■ Lack of security and safe places to play ■ Impact on friendships and family relations ■ Difficulty in cooking and eating together as a family ■ Impact on well-being and mental health ■ Difficulties getting to and from school ■ Poor sleep ■ Early taking on of adult roles and responsibilities. 🗓️ It's cold outside, yet still so many young people have nowhere to sleep night after night 🥶 re:sustain is gearing up, alongside the wider industry, for this year's LandAid SleepOut 💤🌙, an incredible annual initiative dedicated to raising vital funds to support young people throughout the UK without a place to call home 🏠 David Harvey-Evers, Katie Whipp, Finlay Milliner and I will be getting a taste for the night's elements across two cities: #Bristol and #London. Join us as we take a stand against youth homelessness - it really is amazing what the industry can achieve when it works together 🤝 This issue is especially close to my heart as 5% of homeless people are veterans - a number which rose 14% in 2022 - no one who has served their country should be in this position, without the support of their family, military and social network. Op Fortitude aimed to remove veterans sleeping on the streets by the end of 2023 and the Government has committed to ending rough sleeping by the end of 2024. ✨ Hopestead’s Impact Report 2023-24 - #HopeFunds ✨ Watch the highlights from our Impact Report – this week, we’re focusing on #HopeFunds 🤝 Through Hope Funds, we’re supporting other charities, social enterprises and community groups with grants so they can amplify their activity and impact. Hope Funds supported: - 19 organisations - With more than £176,000 in funding - This led to more than 12,000 people being supported. Cambridgeshire-based homelessness support service Wintercomfort for the Homeless was one recipient of a Hope Funds grant. Hear from services manager Agnieszka Gada on the impact this had for them: 💬 “We provide service for rough sleepers and vulnerably housed adults. It's like a hub for support. “The Hopestead funding goes towards the employment cost so we can deliver services. Expanding Housing First initiatives can significantly support charities like Newbury Soup Kitchen in housing our clients. Housing First offers a pathway to more sustainable outcomes for our clients. Rather than solely providing temporary relief, Newbury Soup Kitchen can collaborate with Housing First programs to facilitate the transition of our clients into permanent housing. This allows us to focus its resources on other essential services, such as providing meals and outreach. Sadly, this service is required now more than ever with the increasing rise in homelessness across England. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to housing as a fundamental human right, Housing First can support our clients find a long-term solution to homelessness. #notjustsoup

🚨 Urgent Community Update: Crisis Call Surge 🚨 We’re witnessing a dramatic increase in the number of crisis calls to Bethesda House. Here’s a snapshot of the situation: June 2024: 362 crisis calls July 2024: A staggering 31% increase to 477 crisis calls August 2024: A steady 444 crisis calls Each call averages 15-20 minutes, but some extend to an hour or more. With this influx, ensuring that every call is answered promptly is challenging, especially when our staff is managing other critical tasks like intakes or 1:1 counseling sessions. This creates a shortage of available staff for in-shelter client crisis. This is a clear sign that the epidemic of gender-based violence is escalating in our community. Despite our tireless efforts and stretched resources, we are struggling to keep up with the demand. We urgently need your support to expand our capacity and serve those in desperate need.
