Today, the team at Diamond Day Outdoors also celebrates #WorldOceansDay 🌊🐚 The world's largest ecosystem is often the backdrop to a breathtaking campsite, relaxing vacation, or thrilling fishing trip. But what we don't see every day is how our oceans have been the most vulnerable they've ever been. There are 77-199 million tons of plastic in the ocean. We are at a point where everything contains micro-plastics, including the ocean itself and the animals that inhabit it. It's important to us at Diamond Day Outdoors, that we recognize the impact that we have on the environment and the positive change that we can implement together. That's a century of wisdom swimming through the oceans! 📍Navigation Ninjas: Turtles possess an uncanny ability to navigate vast distances using the Earth's magnetic field. 📍Ocean Vacuum Cleaners: These underwater chompers play a vital role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems by keeping them free of sponges, jellyfish, and other sea creatures. Tomorrow is World Reef Awareness Day and I wanted to post good news stories for it, to get past the doom and gloom but that that is getting harder unfortunately. Record high ocean temperatures are causing "underwater wildfires" out of sight from most. So as summer holidays are getting closer what can you do? - Buy reef safe sun cream "contains only mineral UV-blocking ingredients like oxide and titanium dioxide" - Do a beach cleanup. It doesn't have to be an organised one, if walking on the beach or near the shore, pick up at least one bit of plastic you see. - Reduce or eliminate single-use plastic. - Spread awareness about the importance of coral reefs. 25% of sea life depend on them. - Reduce your intake/buy from sustainable fisheries and don't buy shells or shark products. Here is what a reef should look like (almost). The ocean is facing vast challenges of record-breaking heat, mass coral bleaching, and a sharp rise in plastic pollution. We depend on a healthy ocean for ecosystem services and employment in industries like tourism, shipping, and fishing. Overfishing endangers marine life – disrupting the balance of ecosystems, decimating fish stocks and destroying habitats. If left unaddressed, sea turtles, dolphins, sharks and other species face extinction. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) protect coastal ecosystems such as corals, seagrass beds and mangroves that are threatened by coastal development. For instance, Singapore’s first Marine Park – the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park – supports local marine wildlife such as the critically endangered Neptune’s cup sponge. From leatherbacks to loggerheads, six of the seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered at the hand of humans. Sadly, the fact is that they face many dangers as they travel the seas — including accidental capture and entanglement in fishing gear, the loss of nesting and feeding sites to coastal development, poaching, and ocean pollution including plastic. It is Bali's Turtle Research and Rescue's mission to preserve and protect these endangered species, and they're needing volunteers!
