Consider the following factors: Location: Choose a site with good drainage, away from residential areas, and with easy access to water and feed supplies. Size: Determine the number of pigs you plan to raise. This will influence the size of your pens and the amount of space required for each pig. Shelter: Design pig pens with adequate shelter to protect the pigs from harsh weather conditions. Ensure there is sufficient ventilation and light. 2. Building the Iron Fence A strong and durable iron fence is vital to keep the pigs secure and prevent them from escaping. Here’s how to build it: Materials Needed: Iron rods or iron mesh Concrete for the fence posts Welding equipment Tools for cutting and shaping the iron Construction Steps: Mark the Boundary: Use stakes and string to mark the perimeter of the pig pens. Set the Posts: Dig holes at regular intervals (about 6-8 feet apart) and set the iron posts in concrete. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours. Install the Fence: Attach the iron mesh or rods to the posts, ensuring they are securely welded or fastened. Make sure the fence is high enough to prevent pigs from jumping over. Gate Installation: Install a sturdy gate that’s easy to operate and secure, with a locking mechanism to prevent accidental openings. 3. Preparing the Pig Pens Once the fence is in place, focus on preparing the pens: Flooring: Concrete is the most common flooring option as it’s durable and easy to clean. Make sure the floor has a slight slope for drainage. Feed and Water Troughs: Install feed and water troughs in each pen. Consider automatic watering systems to ensure pigs have constant access to fresh water. Bedding: Provide a comfortable bedding area using straw or sawdust to keep the pigs warm and dry.
