The SDSU Mission Valley Innovation District will unite the university, industry, and community to advance impactful ideas between students, faculty, and startups to tackle climate, health, and transportation challenges. This 160-acre site will encompass 1.6 million square feet of office, technology, and research space dedicated to enabling the university and its partners to create new career pathways, expand the region's capabilities, and design new solutions to significant problems facing our community and the world. In the era of transformative innovation for societal and enviromental challenges, diffusion processes can not be reduced to a mere market oriented linearity. Technology transfer processes from universities can be reimagined leveraging societal needs and increasingly involving new actors as civil society organisations and social enterprises. In this new paper published in Technological Forecasting and Social Change, we investigate how technology transfer offices (TTOs) can be reimagined as novel intermediaries for trasformative innovation, changing their roles, resources and capabilities, introducing new skills as cocreation, codesign, social impact assessment and more flexible mandates. #Organisations matter in innovative projects! Centered around the theme of 'What are you doing for a better society?', participants will delve into topics such as Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities, Responsible Consumption, and Climate Action. The event's highlights include recognition for selected projects, mentoring by KCG's IPR Cell for patent processing, and support from the KCG Incubation Center for prototype to product development. Cohort 2.0 of the Science Creates Engineering Biology Accelerator were nothing short of amazing. The talent, grit and determination of each member of the cohort resulted in a highly productive programme, from which 16 companies have emerged ready to take their next steps in the world of deep tech and use their Engineering Biology technologies to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges in human health, food security and the environment. The final stretch of the programme will see up to 10 accelerator graduate companies awarded £50,000 of equity-free feasibility funding from UKRI to further accelerate their technology development. In October, Cohort 2.0 will return to Bristol to attend the Venture Days and the Science Creates Autumn Showcase, where they'll have the opportunity to pitch to an audience of deep tech investors. It's been a pleasure supporting all 20 innovators in bringing their Engineering Biology ideas to life, and collaborating with some of deep tech's best experts to do so.
