The Scaffold Savage 👹 ...a doodle of the monster I described in my previous post. 🖊 I think personifiying physical structures can actually tell you a lot about how the ordinary person might interpret them: Tall structure made of complex, spiky leaning poles = awesomely intimidating thing I must not go near! Plus, everyone loves and understands characters; they have distinct appearances, outfits and personalities - just like a building has a distinct structure, shell, and atmosphere. This analogy can translate widely, but I think especially so for younger people - those who may not grasp what buildings are intended to do or mean. It got me thinking more broadly; I often read about how architects struggle to find ways of communicating their work to non-architects, and that it results in not being valued, etc. So, could we use characterisations of architecture as a tool to communicate our complex design ideas and schemes to the ordinary person? 🤔

ISOMETRIC SECTIONS! Sections can be a valuable tool for architects to demonstrate spatial relationships, scale and different elements. Adding 3-dimensional feeling into them further enhances and expands the relationship with its context. Here, for an Architectural University project, I particularly highlighted the atrium section where all the activity happens with many studios congregating and linked with flying bridges. Our new article "Unveiling Interactions Among Architectural Sketching, Parametric Design, and Digital Fabrication Using Linkography," which is derived from my doctoral dissertation is published. These sculptures are as impressive as they are complex, the degree of engineering often requires pushing the envelope of what's possible. What strikes me most is that these structures are temporary, with very limited substructure permitted to transfer the mass of the sculpture, and cars, to the ground.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in an Architectural Graphics class, and it was an incredibly enriching experience! This course offered me a fresh perspective on visual communication and the fundamentals of architectural design. As someone with a strong interest in both technology and the arts, I found it fascinating to explore how precise lines and creative design can come together to convey complex ideas and structures. Architectural graphics is not just about drawing buildings, it's a powerful tool for storytelling and conceptualization. It has broadened my understanding of space, proportion, and aesthetics, which are all crucial elements in creating functional and beautiful environments. The skills I gained from this class are invaluable, not only for my future projects in nanotechnology but also in exploring the interplay between engineering and art.

A couple of days ago I continued my unofficial book launch tour by visiting Heyne Tillett Steel. On my way over I dropped in on my friends at the The Institution of Structural Engineers and had a quick coffee. They also gave me a physical copy of Inclusive design for structural engineers, which I have been looking forward to reading.   Reading the introduction on the train home I was struck by the breadth of the topic, which goes way beyond designing for wheelchair access. However, I thought I would share a personal story about designing for wheelchair access. Back in the early 2000’s I was a graduate engineer and working on a complex project which was extending an existing building to create a theatre and music rooms. Acoustics were of the utmost importance, but the frame also need to be light and agile, so we ended up with a steel frame and cast in-situ concrete floors. There was one area where the levels were particularly problematic and I was struggling to get it to work structurally. I had a meeting with the architect and we went through all the options. My preferred option was to have the in-situ slab sitting on top of a steel beam, but this required a step in the floor, which enabled the structure to work but limited accessibility of the top tier of the theatre to wheel chair users. The architect, who was a wheelchair user, questioned why they should be excluded from that part of the theatre? I sheepishly agreed that they shouldn’t, and in the end we found some research on steel shear head connections for flat slabs that enable us to create the structure step free by including the shear connection within the depth of the slab.   As I begin my journey into this book I am struck that this book is unlikely to provide me with new ways to calculate things, instead it will help me to create the empathy to know why I should be designing differently. Celebrating 100 days of the 180 Architectural short film projects. It’s such an honor to be committed to this project. Generally, I shy away from the question of picking a favorite architect because architecture is a collaborative effort between some many different important collaborators. I.e other architects in the firm, structural engineers, landscape architects, civil engineers etc. So the idea of a starchitect doesn’t quite seat well with me. That being said, I really really love Eero Saarinen’s works. So I knew for this 100 days milestone I wanted to feature a project he was involved in. Hence one of my favorite projects in Wnnetka, IL: Crow Island Elementary School by then Perkins, Wheeler, and Will (now Perkins&Will ) & Eero Saarinen.
