In the world of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics, a profound comprehension of rock mass properties is paramount. Among the critical tools in this field stands the Geological Strength Index (GSI). https://lnkd.in/d_gjJEzJ

The Geological Strength Index (GSI) is crucial for understanding rock mass properties in geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics. It aids in assessing the quality of rock masses, which is essential for evaluating the stability of rock formations and supporting engineering decisions. GSI's numerical scale characterizes rock mass quality, influencing the estimation of mechanical properties and decision-making processes in engineering projects.

Interpreting structural cross-sections based on field data is frequently a significant challenge for geologists, as subsurface structures are often obscured. Many of the interpretations are based on predetermined models. However, the absence of detailed subsurface data encourages creative thinking. Structural models must respet the field data and not viceversa. This concept is illustrated by the interpretation of a basement-cored anticline in northern Chile.

🔍 When it comes to predicting shear strength in granular materials, precision is paramount. Our latest study introduces a novel criterion that aligns impressively with the ideal predictive accuracy, as shown in our recent validation tests. While some models overestimate (Indraratna 1993, 1994 and 1998), others like Barton-Kjaersli 1981, may underestimate the sheer strength. 3rd Annual Pipeline Geohazards Forum - TSU Geotechnical Presentation You can see in the image how the front row managed to stay awake. Using standard dachshunds to build your biceps is never recommended. A 30lb and 25lb dumbbell would be a 1000 times cheaper. Also, dumbbells do not poop in the house during light rain. TSU Geotechnical gave an "in camera" presentation on essentially what keeps middle aged engineers up at night. Hopefully the talk can be given in a public forum following the 2024 IPC. This threatened presentation would include the following scenarios through case studies and lived experience: 1.Operating Blind - unaware of threat 2.Condition Changes - unidentified or rapid change in threat 3.Logic/Bias Errors - misidentification or undervaluation of threat 4.Impeded Proactivity - internal, landowner, stakeholder, regulatory or political issues that could delay or prevent either risk control measure or mitigation implementation Hopefully we can make it happen :)
