Cybersecurity is quickly becoming the most popular kid in school… Excuse the cheesy line, but this week has brought an eye-opening swell of major cybersecurity headlines. 🔺 CrowdStrike – Despite the challenging hiccup, which I’m confident they’ll overcome, it's INSANE how many were impacted by today's outage. Planes were grounded, and desk workers around the globe were forced to twiddle their thumbs with the blue screen of death on their laptops. 🔹 Wiz – Google is closing in on its largest startup acquisition ever, in talks to buy Wiz for a whopping $23 billion. A cloud security startup that was founded just 4 years ago. Sheesh. It's undeniable that effective cybersecurity is essential for business and infrastructure in today’s world. Google understands that betting on innovative cyber could be a home run. Exciting times in the security space, and I’m pumped to be a part of it. This week, been digging in to CrowdStrike earnings and reflecting back on lessons learned across the #cybersecurity and broader #IT industries. #Availability and #resiliency are paramount. Customers are going to be re-thinking their desire to consolidate their toolchains and move to a platform approach. Deal cycles will lengthen. How do you survive “Blue Screen of Death Day brought to you by Crowdstrike” if you were part of the team? To paraphrase AEW wrestler Toni Storm: “Chin up. Chest out, And watch for the shoe.” 1) Chin up: Everyone in tech makes mistakes but most of them are in private. This one is very public. Don’t worry. You’ll make more as will everyone else and someone else will make a bigger one. However, being in cybersecurity, those mistakes are more public facing. 2). Chest out: There is a lot of armchair quarterbacking out there right now (I have my own predictions but I’ll keep those to myself). You’ll be in the news cycle for today but you do something every day that 99.9999% of the global population can barely understand let alone do. Good on you. 3). Watch for the shoe: Stuff always comes out of no way. There will be some stuff that happens behind closed doors that might catch you off guard and could disrupt things. Firings happen. Take this as an opportunity to learn about the situation and what went wrong so you can improve it for next time. Reflecting on the unprecedented global outage caused by the recent #falcon update from CrowdStrike, my perspective is its not worth it to be too hard on yourself when things don't go as planned. If a Trillion $ market leader along with their leading cybersecurity partner can experience such a significant disruption, it's a clear reminder that perfection is an illusion and setbacks are part of the journey. This incident underscores that nothing in life is permanent, and change is inevitable. Well today was a sh!t day for many in the tech world. And those who rely on tech (basically everyone). It looked like Microsoft’s systems had cr*ped out and took everything offline. The thing is, it doesn’t seem to #Microsoft who caused this issue. Or at least not directly. You see, the technology landscape is complex, and everyone relies on other parties to do certain tasks. Even Microsoft it seems. In recent years, #cybersecurity has been a key issue for every tech company. And it needs lots of attention to keep things safe. One of most prominent companies helping to keep these tech systems safe is #CrowdStrike. These guys provide real-time protection to keep the bad guys out. The problem is they have to update the database used to check for all the bad stuff on a regular basis. And today’s update was a real dud. So bad that it basically broke “everything”. Yes, Microsoft’s systems went done, but they weren’t the root-cause.
