As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, D&A recognizes the incredible contributions of our Hispanic and Latino/a/e friends, neighbors, and colleagues. From advocacy to equity-driven initiatives, we’re committed to lifting up all voices and ensuring that everyone’s story is heard. You might wonder, what’s the difference between Hispanic and Latino/a/e? 🤔 Hispanic refers to individuals with roots in Spanish-speaking countries, emphasizing language. On the other hand, Latino/a/e refers to people from Latin American countries, focusing on geography, regardless of whether they speak Spanish, Portuguese, or Indigenous languages. Both terms celebrate vibrant, diverse cultures that enrich our communities in unique ways. This month, we honor the history, culture, and influence of these communities, who continue to inspire our work toward a more inclusive, just society. #HispanicHeritageMonth #EquityFirst #CelebrateDiversity #InclusionInAction

🎉Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month🎉 From September 15 to October 15, we honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community. With over 60 million Latinos making up nearly 19% of the population, their impact on our nation spans centuries, predating Spain’s colonization. Through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Treaty of Paris that followed the Mexican American and Spanish-American wars, this community has shaped our nation since the Revolutionary War. 🇨🇷🇸🇻🇬🇹🇭🇳🇳🇮🇲🇽🇨🇱🇧🇿 2020 census data states one in every four children in the United States is Hispanic/Latino and a recent study found that Latino history is largely left out in high school textbooks used across the country. https://lnkd.in/gEXnZmJi We celebrate key Independence Days, and reflect on the deep roots of the Latino experience in shaping America. Let’s embrace this month to learn, appreciate, and uplift Latino voices and achievements! Not all Hispanic and Latinos share the same background, and assuming so can lead to misunderstandings. While there are common threads, each community has its own unique history, traditions, and customs. For instance: 🗣️🌎Language: Spanish may be widely spoken, but there are significant populations fluent in Portuguese, and indigenous languages. Moreover, variations in accents and dialects abound within Spanish-speaking communities. 🍲🌶️🍍Cuisine: Hispanic and Latino cuisine is a delicious blend of indigenous, African, European, and Asian influences. However, the specific dishes and flavors vary greatly across regions and countries. ⛪🕊️🌿Religion: While Catholicism is often predominant, Hispanic and Latino communities also practice a diverse range of faiths including Protestantism, Judaism, and indigenous spiritual beliefs. Each of these adds a unique dimension to the cultural fabric of these communities. Assuming a uniform background overlooks this rich tapestry of diversity, undermining the unique identities and experiences within Hispanic/Latino communities. Let's celebrate this richness and connect authentically! National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. This observance began as a week-long celebration in 1968 and was expanded to a month in 1988. The timing is significant as it coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile12. It’s a time to recognize and celebrate the profound impact Hispanic and Latino communities have had on the cultural fabric of the United States. #HispanicHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritage #LatinxHeritageMonth #Latinx #Latina #Latino #MesDeLaHerenciaHispana #CelebrateDiversity #CulturaLatina #OrgulloHispano Text created on Edge Copilot AI.

Hispanic Heritage Month - our co-ED Dr. Linet Mera may have turned it into… Latin American, Latine, Latinx, and Hispanic Heritage Month And yet, she says, it still doesn’t quite fit. Being Hispanic, or “Spanish-speaking” is not a race, it is a product of colonization. And plenty of Latine folks don’t speak Spanish. When we dig into the category it doesn’t really match up with the plentiful cultures and people it is purporting to encompass. She asks you not to settle (pun intended) with “Hispanic Heritage Month” but to take a dip into being uncomfortable and sitting face to face with the terms and history. All it takes is trying and being open to change. More importantly, she asks us all to "Consider the intersections: Indigeneity, disability, queerness, African heritage, religion, neurodivergence, single parent, elder, etc… and who we are without having to center colonization." In this month of celebration and every day she urges us to think expansively about “Hispanic”. This year do it while you get out the vote so that the diversity of realities and voices regardless of label are represented in every election. Follow Vote.org to get all the information you need to vote and to learn more about how you can do your part so all voices are heard. As a Brazilian, Hispanic Heritage Month can sometimes feel a bit distant since Brazilians are often categorized as Latinos, but not Hispanic. This distinction reminds me of the importance of self-identification—labels like Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx carry different cultural and personal meanings for everyone. This article clarifies these terms, their origins, and their cultural relevance. It is important to highlight the diversity of experiences within the community and encourage an honest conversation around identity. https://lnkd.in/g8Rf7ih8 #HispanicHeritageMonth
